Iceland in June

I am taking the family to Iceland for the latter part of June with five days in London to see my nephew who works for BP. Have spent a fair amount of time in the Far North (Alaska) so I am used to the light.

Am thinking either blad with 50/150 for b&w or M2 with 21/35/90 and will carry a DLux 5 for color. Obviously, Iceland is all about the outdoors with geysers and glaciers.

What else?

I agree with AndrewNYC, I would take the Blad if I had to choose between it and the M2.
I along with a couple of friends will be touring the east or west fjords (depending on weather) in June
and I will be using my RB67 for landscapes and my newly aquired M6 for people and when walking around the small towns.

Iceland in June

I am an Icelander currently living in LA, I have been back home numerous times in the summer time, both system would work fine. If you are intending to use tripod the Hasselblad would work great, especially at evening /night time. I have brought my Leica system there as well and used mostly my 24/35 mm and less my 50/75mm. My focus was on landscape/ street life and some people photography. Same was with my Hasse more of my 50/80 and I did not use my 150 at all. What do you have in mind doing and how long of a trip is this going to be ?

Iceboy: we will be in Iceland for 12 days and 5 in London. You have some nice photos on your blog and have convinced me to take the Hasselblad, 50/80/150 lenses, and both black and white and color film. And if I am going to haul all that I should probably include a tripod. I will also carry a Dlux5 for when the blad is too much. Am just getting back into MF but for landscapes, it beats 35 and hope it is worth all the weight.

We want to explore a few of the national parks, hike and explore the remoter northwest corner of the island. I am the photographer in the family so must be flexible with my wife and daughter to also meet their interests.

If it's a family trip take the Leica and 2 lenses and leave the rest behind. If it's a photo trip take everything with you and leave the family behind 🙂

There is probably some hiking involved and then the heavy equipment could be not so nice.

Thanks ! I would skip though the the 150mm ( f/Hasse) and use telephoto lens using the 90 on your Leica to save on weight and having too many lenses and photo equipment to choose from. If you have a light tripod i.e.; the carbon series from Gitzo that would help with the weight! ;-) I used my Leica when walking around small villages and towns as well as in the nature.
Iceland has a lot of vistas and panoramic views so the 50 & 80 on your Hasselblad will most like see the most action combining with your tripod. Using two different 120 backs ( loaded with color/bw ) works great! I am from the Northwest myself and that peninsula, The Westfjords, would alone take up 10 days but worth it for it amazing scenery, narrow fjords and the food and its people. Iceland has nature at its best right next to the roads, most often you do not need to hike to much for great perspective, it will pay of since you are taking your family as well. Have a great time!

Ok, is this a trip specifically for photography? Will you be holding people up if you get serious while photographing?

If serious photography trip, then bring the Hasselblad. If it is more of a vacation and non-photographers will be there, bring the M2.

Iceland Update

Iceland Update

The family and I are headed to Iceland for the last half of June. We are also spending five days in London visiting our nephew who works for BP.

Since it is not specifically a photo vacation, I have decided to leave the blad and tripod at home. I will be taking my new Leica R6.2 with 50 Summicron and M2 with 21/35/90. I plan to shoot the entire vacation on Ektar 100. Some options include taking the 15 since it is so small and light and the Digilux5 for the same reason. However, am leaning toward leaving the digital at home or giving it to the wife for her use. And occasionally I play with the idea of just taking the R6.2.

From comments posted earlier, it appears that any lenses longer then normal may not see much use. I am wondering how much use the 15 would see. And I just purchased a couple lens for the blad so I won't be getting any optics for the R6.2 for a few months.

I visited Iceland in 2000 when my only camera was the M6 + 50mm + 25mm. Nice and light equipment. Didn't miss a tele lens. But I must say that I never miss a tele lens. Not my way of seeing.
