If you could keep only one P&S...

Too many things mixed here...

A point and shoot -a real one- is called like that just because there's no option to control anything...

Trying to shoot all kinds of more controllable cameras as point-and-shoot ones, is another story...

If making our cameras point-and-shoot ones, we accept all sizes, a real RF with a moderate wideangle lens should be the best option, and if low light capabilities and manual ISO and AF options are considered part of our game (as they are), I'd say the Hexar AF is the best tool with nothing coming close...

If the limit to consider is size and portability, to me the Olympus XA is the best one bacause it can be used as a point-and-shoot without focusing both under direct sun and for ovrcast scenes, and it can also be focused and offers control on its aperture, and even a backlight +1.5 button that can also be used instantly with great results if the subject is in a too dark spot for average metering alone... I know nothing as compact and powerful as the XA.

So, depending on allowed size, XA and AF seem the best camera designs...

Cheers,

Juan

Actually there are lots of good P&S cameras. I have many and like each for different reasons. But the one I use the most and would most likely to keep is a Pentax UC-1. Small, absolutely superb lens and great auto exposure plus fast AF and all in a very very small package.

That sounds like an interesting camera - I haven't heard of that one before. I recently purchased the Yashica Kyocera T Zoom and it has a killer lens for the cost.

Many dedicated street shooters swear by the Yashica T4 and the T Zoom has a very similar lens.

Does the the Yashica T have Carl Zeiss optics like the Yashica T Zoom?

The Yashica T* AF comes with the Carl Zeiss 35mm 3.5 lens (but not a zoom) and it's the same lens as the others in the T series...:D

I had to make this decision a few days ago. Sold my Ricoh GR1 and decided to keep my Olympus XA. GR1 took great pics but to me the XA was much more responsive and similar to the way I shoot with my Leicas. Guess I'm just a manual focus kinda guy.

The Yashica T3 has an f2.8 lens, all others in the series f3.5. Build quality is the best of the T* series. compared my T3 with my dads T5 and its much better built. its also much bigger. I had a Yashica T which didnt survive to the end of its first roll. Seemed flimsy to me and was confirmed when the shutter packed in.

Out of the Contax T, Fujifilm Klasse S, and Lomo LC-A+ I have, I'd keep the Klasse. Usable, AE, Bulb, nice finder, nice to look at and a lens on par with what's on "proper" cameras.

Leica III counts of course. I have didteched a Ricoh GR1 (nice camera) and use a Leica I as a P+S

Surely it is the original P+S...

I've been interested in a UC-1 for some time, but they keep going for too much on ebay.
Another contender I'd like to try is the Fuji Tiara.

I have a Pentax Espio mini(UC-1) and it's fabulous. Automatically goes into spot meter mode on hard to focus objects or in low light. It can register with no flash on my vintage tuner with lamp lit analogue display from across my bedroom. Even the f2.8 lens P&S's I have can't do that!!!

I've owned a Fuji DL Super Mini(Tiara) and liked it. Slippy though and the aluminium case does dent easily. Great contrast from the lens but quite a bit of vignetting. I felt that it was more targeted towards a female audience. I do have a Fuji DL Super Mini Zoom that has dents all over it and the zoom sounds like its on its last legs, even with a new battery.

Easy: Olympus Mju-II / Stylus Epic.

10 years and counting. Been everywhere, seen everything. Fantastic results in nice sunny weather, good results anywhere else. As foolproof as any camera can be.

AF: Contax T3, but as I don't have anyone right now it would be my Ricoh Gr1s.
Rangefinder: Olympus 35 RD, if it's not considered a compact, Olympus XA.

Based on what I now own, it would be a Contax T2. The lens is awesome, and the camera is very well built.

The Yashica T4 Zoom (US designation) is a great, cheap P&S, and the Zeiss Vario-Tessar makes a super-sharp image. However, I would give it up for my Contax T3.

Interesting isn't it? The only thing that's consistent here is that we can't agree what a P&S camera is...

The Sigma DP2s is great, but overall....another vote for Contax T3 (w/ filter adapter)! The only thing I miss is spot-AF.
