I know this has been touched on before but if anyone has any advice they can offer on this specific camera, I would be forever grateful. The camera is in nice shape except for the slow shutter speeds, and as this is a back-up I would rather avoid professional servicing if at all possible. Please let me explain: Each of the slow speeds will work properly the first time they are used, but the second time they will be way off (either too fast or the shutter will stay open as long as the button is pressed). All of the slow speeds are this way and the camera works better when on it's "back" rather than the "normal" upright position. I have a copy of the repair manual for the IIIf but I would like to learn more from anyone with experience in repairing this type of problem before I go any further. Any and all help will be much appreciated. I know that a CLA would be the way to go but being as I do not use this body, and especially the slow speeds that often, I am not sure it is worth the expense to me right now. It would be nice to have then working again though. Thanks.

the camera needs a CLA.
the slow speed escapement at the base of the camera needs to be cleaned , done during the CLA.

Hi,

Most probably all it needs is a bit of cleaning and oil in the slow speed system, which is not so complex after all.

Unlike the later models this one is more involved when doing repairs. If you don't know what you are doing you'll ruin it. Let a repairman fix it right.

Putting a drop of oil on the slow speed escapement won't do the trick..

yes,
oil will actually attract more dirt and dust.

the whole slow speed escapement unit has to be removed and placed in a solvent like naphtha or alcohol for cleaning.

using oil or a solvent directly without removing the slow speed unit can cause greater damage, like the oil or solvent dissolving the glue that holds the shutter curtain ribbons to the rollers.
