I recently bought quite a load of Ilford HP5+ at a discount price in bricks of ten and thought the price was very good (2£ a roll). Now I realize that HP5 only has 24 exposures per roll.

First I thought my camera was jamming, then I thought my camera can't keep jamming at the 25th frame, then I realized that it only has the 24 frames.

2£ for 36 exposures would be good, but not for 24. Do Ilford 35mm films always only have 24 frames? If yes its a rip-off I think... I won't buy it any longer..

PS: Does anyone know why APX is being sold cheap everywhere nowadays?

I haven't seen Ilford film in 24's for ages over here. The usual length would be 36, as normal. It sounds like a slightly dodgy deal on the film you bought unfortunately.

On the positive side, it works very nicely doesn't it 🙂

I agree its good film, but also when developing it yourself its essentially a waste of chemicals. I bought it at Silverprint in London, a store that I actually trust and like. They have bricks of APX for 17.40£ now 😀

Correction, Silverprint sells 36 exposures, the 24 exposure ones I bought were from 7dayshop.com. Thats where I won't buy anymore 🙂

Many (most?) films, including Ilford's HP5+, are made in both 24 and 36 exposure rolls. Also, 7dayshop's film selections are clearly described as 135-24 or 135-36.

Maybe you placed your order a little too fast -- but who hasn't done that?

Where's the confusion? Most every 35mm film comes in 24 & 36 exposure cassettes. I've made the same mistake in getting 24 instead of 36, but that's one mistake I'll only make once.

Some Kodak films used to come in 12 exposure rolls as I recall- they were listed as 'Police' films, for surveillence photos.

As far as I recall, the darkroom-loading, no-cassette Leica prototype took 50 shots. The most they could easily get into a daylight loading cassette, in the same-sized 'ole, with the film bases of the time, was 36-38. Three dozen seemed reasonable.

Then came 'half loads' of 18, soon lengthened to 20 (a easy way to seem like better value, the only expense being 3 inches/75mm more film). Then 20 was lengthened to 24, with the same logic. That opened the way for 12-exposure loads...

Seriously, it strikes me as rather precipitous to accuse Ilford of ripping people off with 24-exposure cassettes, without doing the slightest research to discover that their standard load is 36, with 24 as a low-cost option, or indeed, without apparently bothering to read the number of exposures on the film.

Cheers,

R.

Lots of film is available in 24 exposure lengths, as previously posted. If you do a price check, you might be surprised to find the cost of 36 exposure and 24 exposure films are pretty close. Right now, Freestyle sells HP5 36 exposure for $3.79 a roll while the 24 exposure rolls are $3.29. Fifty percent more film in a 36 exposure roll for only 50 cents more makes the longer roll a better buy.

Not all film prices work out this well--some Kodak films are more than $1.00 more expensive for the 36 exposure rolls.

What an odd thing to say. 7dayshop clearly state the number of exposures is 24 or 36.

Does it say 36 exposures on your 'order history'?

24 exp rolls are more convenient for hanging to dry at home
You already spent the money, now use ti wisely 😉

APX is being sold cheap because it has been out of production for a year or three

I like 24 rolls. Takes me so long to shoot a 36 roll, I frequently break into the camera and develop what I've used rather than waiting another 2 weeks...
Different strokes I guess!
