i'm a digital guy now...

i need the force.
read the manual last night and all seems simple enough.
but i can't figure out and seem to have screwed up the software so i can download some pics to the computer. i can't get my computer to recognize the camera.
very frustrating.

Best purchase you can make is a USB CF card reader. Makes life much simpler (and it's way faster)

Maybe deinstall and reinstall the Canon software?? It always worked okay on my rig though I preferred using a card reader.

Gene

I think Gene has a camera mintier up there in Port Credit, he just passes it over the camera and it turns back to mint condition :D

Joe don't listen to that thing, it is evil ! Pack it and send it to me and I'll forward it to the Spanish Inquisition !

As for the computer thingie, you can try reinstalling the Canon software, or unplug / plug the camera and see if your system sees it.

Also, card readers are now so common you can find them in the local photo shops and discount stores.

I am sure Joe hasn't abandoned his rangefinders...
He must have cabin fever..
I use my P&S digital a lot with my Ebay stuff and it
was great when I needed to order some small parts
and I could shoot a macro shot of them to send to the
vendor. I really like being able to display my images
directly from the camera to a large TV screen. Makes
for a great slide show.
Rob

that's right rob, i have not abandoned my rf love. i'm only that fickle when it come to women...;)

no, i love my canon p cams and even have a bit of lust for that ugly 7. i will never voluntarily leave film.
i just want to play a bit and yes, cabin fever is part of it.
now i can play at home, see the pics practice my photoshopping etc.
and gene made a very generous deal that was hard to resist.

Hope you enjoy the link below. I still watch it over and over. TOO FUNNY!!!

Chimping EXPOSED!
David thanks for the link, that was great! :D :D :D Also I had not heard of the word "chimping" until this thread, and I imagined it to mean taking a million pictures, as in "give a bunch of chimps typewriters and one of them will eventually bang out a Shakespeare sonnet". Now I know what it means! :)

... i can't get my computer to recognize the camera ...

My wife's desktop (running Windows 98) got so messed up with spyware I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall all of the software, including the software for an older Canon PowerShot A20 digital camera. Everything went fine except the computer wouldn't recognize the camera (in the original installation the camera was recognized). I uninstalled and then reinstalled the Canon software, but had the same problem.

Then I stumbled on a solution:

I went to "Control Panel" and clicked on "Install New Hardware" (I had the camera connected to the USB port and turned on). I got a message along the lines of "Canon A20 installed, but there is a problem with the driver." I then followed the prompts to search for a new driver on the Canon CD. Voila, the problem was fixed!

I don't know if this will work for you, but you might want to try it.

Another possible problem is that the software CD for the Canon G2 may not include drivers for Windows XP. The G2 has been out for a while and it may have preceeded the introduction of Windows XP - I'm not sure. Canon has a website with updated drivers for its digital cameras and these can be downloaded. I don't have the URL, but a Google search should turn it up.

thanks old prof.
i tried the control panel approach but it asks for what camera as canon is not listed. so it prompts me for the cd but when i put the cd in its wont recognize the drive.
the driver for windows is supposed to be on the cd but it wont recognize the cd.
kind of a vicious circle.
if it's easier and quicker i think i might go the card reader route but i need more info first.
i have a mission, research!

Hi Joe,

I second the suggestion for a card reader. That's what I use for all digital cameras. Once its hooked up (and software installed if needed - often it isn't) the computer will recognize the CF card in the reader and treat it somewhat like another drive on the computer. It will have a letter assigned, etc..

If you're shooting in JPEG right now, you'll find that many, many programs will read that format directly from the CF card or from your hard drive (once you transfer files over). For reviewing, sorting, etc. of files I use a program called "Breezebrowser". I believe there's a free trial at breezesys.com

The G2 has nice file quality. There's some shutter lag so one needs to practice a somewhat psychic approach to photography; the shutter needs to be tripped a little before the desired moment of exposure. That reminds me, I was travelling in Nova Scotia last year and saw a sign at a convention center that said: "Psychic Convention...followed by dates and details". And I thought to myself: "What do they need a sign for?"

Cheers,

Sean

that's good info sean.
the software with the camera included breezebrowser.
i'm gonna check out some readers this weekend.

joe

Hi Joe,

I think that if you check again, you may find that the software your thinking of is called "ZoomBrowser". Breezebrowser is an independent third-party program. The card readers should be available at Staples, Office Depot, etc.

Cheers,

Sean
