I'm Staying!

I also find this forum a welcome refuge, wherever I might be. I've enjoyed following the discussions in my own areas of interest, as well as learned alot about other perspectives from other parts of the world. I'm sad to see Bill go, I really enjoyed his informative posts, as well as his curmudgeonly character. Things change, but thanks to Kim, Joe, and Jose, RFF remains my favorite photo site on the net.

Hi,

This forum is a wealth of knowledge about anything related to cameras. Want to find the best lens that your winning lottery ticket can buy ? You got it. Want to know what MF camera you can buy with the nickel you just found on the street ? There it is. Need the best repairman for your super-duper-maxi-deluxe piece of electronics ? He'll be online. Wanted to know how to get a strip of leather off an animal you just drove over and onto your camera ? The leather workshop has just started, right next to the woodworks and the lens polishing ones.

People with these kinds of artisanal experience are usually very friendly, because they've quit the rat race a long time ago. That's the atmosphere here, in my opinion. We all know something (be you 20 or 80) and because we're here, we'd rather give input to help while we're at it. I can imagine some people getting irritated over a couple of things, but I've seen the same happen on the Olympus mailing list, which is another one of the really nice Internet communities I've had the luck to stumble upon. I have been on and off there for over 10 years and conflicts come and go. That's life, just ignore it and enjoy the rest of the threads: 99% is still the same as before, you know. I'm not off the Olympus list now because of what the list has become: it was different yet still as nice as any of the times I had subscribed before, when I unsubscribed. I just couldn't handle the volume of that list and this combined and I'm using RF mainly these days.

For those who did leave, I hope for them it's a step for the better. This isn't the place for everybody, that's normal. But it's still a very varied place that I love coming back to.

Peter.

Hi Kim- Thanks for summing up what is right about RFF so perfectly.

I've seen other posts recently advocating rude discorse as being "lively" and "honest." I have a feeling that few of these advocates would behave the same way IRL as we used to say in IRC (In Real Life and Internet Relay Chat).

I haven't been a perfect gentleman myself. But, I think I've found a happy space here at RFF and would rather seek ways to agree or disagree as a gentleman and not behave like a sports hooligan online.

Thanks for providing a wonderful site. I'm one of your thick skinned members and rather enjoy some the the edgier controveries. However, as an ex-moderator of a scale modeling forum, I can appreciate the necessity of maintaining a sense of decorum.
If you want trouble, someone start a thread on " UV filters on lenses for protection: Pro & Con". We'd lose about 1/2 dozen members over that one!

We are probably going to lose 1/2 dozen members just because you mentioned the damn thing!

BTW I don't use F%$£*g UV filters on my glass 😀

Actually its OK to express an opinion. The correct format for being banned is

*I use filters & anyone that doesn't has NO respect for their glass and should be shot.

*I don't use filters & anyone that does has NO respect for the purity of the image and should be shot.

Don't give up on Bill Mattocks ... he may have a change of heart and come back. Hope so.

...One of the abilities a mod has is to "see" deleted posts. A short while ago, Bill spent nearly the whole day writing posts and promptly deleting them, it was quite an impressive effort! Shortly afterwards, there was a post about censorship and how bad it was. Several jumped on the bandwagon until it was pointed out that it Bill himself who was doing it....

I don't understand why someone would want to waste his own time and the time of others doing something like that. It must have had some entertainment value to him. 😕 BTW, isn't that considered "trolling".

A few weeks ago he posted that his photography "sucked" and that he was selling most of his gear. A few of us offered some encouragement just like we did a few months ago when his church wanted him to do first communion photos for migrant farm worker families. I guess we just wasted our time.

The most important thing here is the broad spectrum, from folders to digital, from diafine to inkjet, from diaphragm shapes to invading england and all mostly rangefinder related.
Invading England? I have always thought France missed a historical opportunity to repossess the Channel Isles during the 1982 guerra de las Malvinas!

Closer to the point, I wish I had more time to devote to this forum (and photography in general), but it is far and away the nicest online community I know of. Jorge, mods, please keep up the good work. Thanks. I promise I'll pay my dues as soon as I manage to sell some gear (mostly Minolta SLR).

(And I usually don't use protective filters but there are exceptions.)

According to "The Golden Rules"
Rule No. 2 - No "Trolling"
2) You will not post any topic that disrupts the peace and harmony of this forum. Don't create meaningless threads with the sole purpose of starting a dispute. This includes messages in profiles and signatures.

None of what he put in any of those posts could possibly fall into this category as none of the content was likely to start a dispute - especially after it was deleted. As he deleted them, his post count wasn't going up so it wasn't spamming either. I suppose it could be considered a waste of his time but that his to waste. 😉

Hey, an improvised soft focus filter. Volker, it might be more effective if you remove the lens cap first.

Did so after I took the picture, but with an old Soligor skylight. I didn't want the lube on the frontelement 🙂

But the Sonnar now has a fine raspberry aroma 😀

Despite the "motto" under my signature this is the only forum I like and want to belong to. There's a lot of friendly and kind people, a lot of good issues about gears and photos.
I don't like "fights" and/or "goodbyes" but sometimes they just happen.
The only thing I can say about RFF is: I LIKE IT!!
bye
