I'm Thinking Of Getting A Leica MP

I have both a black and chrome MP. Love them both. Also have many m2-m7, there all good and I like to shoot each variant. The MP's are exceptional.

Update:

I am no longer interested in a Leica MP. So here's what I did with my money that I saved for a new Leica MP...

I got myself a Leica M2 (had it overhauled)... plus a new scanner, LOTS of film (cans of 400ft Double-X and 100ft Tri-X), film chemicals... and still have quite a bit of leftover dough...

For the leftover dough, I am buying:
1) air tickets and booking hotel accommodations for a family holiday
2) a mountain bike with child seats to bring my sons around
3) small bicycles/tricycles for my sons
4) a new sofa
5) probably a new CV lens or two (21mm, 35mm, 50mm)
6) some photo books

I am all set for 2013. 😎

I keep the MP and M6TTL in the same camera bag. Using either one does not cause any confusion with the dial moving in opposite directions. After the first few shots taken with the M6TTL it was easy to adapt. One thing that helps is the feel of the big dial on the M6TTL vs the smaller dial on the MP. When placing the finger on the dial the difference in size is a prompt in knowing which direction to move the dial.

It sounds like let the GAS have its way with you for a short period and then beat it back and you are happy with your decisions!

You buy a MP for 3000$, then you sell a MP for 3000$.

You buy a M2 for 800$, then you sell a M2 for 800$.

If you ask me, for ZERO Dollars, I prefer shooting a MP over an M2 any day. But that's just me.
 
that's a ridiculous way of looking at it, just because you can sell it doesn't mean that you will nor is it a guarantee that the price you sell it for will actually be equal to the purchase price!

i do think that old m2's or m3's offer better bang for your buck than an MP at the moment. the question is whether or not you need a meter inside that ultra-high quality body. i don't need an internal meter so i went with an m3. mp is definitely a nice camera but only worth it if you've got the disposable income to afford it.

It's not a zero sum game for me.

That $2200 difference buys a lot of things WHILE I am enjoying the M2.
 
it's good to resist MP gas, and invest in in travel and family, nice move vincent. the
M2/3/4 are really 95% there if you have a good smooth copy.

although i do not agree on the part:

lame-ass BLINKING 'red-haze' in the MP viewfinder. O baby, I do not miss that.

I from my side, could not resist MP gas, and have my MP for sale at the moment, it's in every regard the better camera than my M2/3/4/6 or whatever similar leica I had, but I chose the M4 for emotional reasons, the lightmeter is not mandatory, but a plus if you need it.

MP Viewfinder is the best imo, brilliant, bright and very flare resistant. notable exceptions are the M5 finder which is about on par, and even 'feels' slightly bigger (M5 have superb finders imo). and a clean M3 finder (for 50 only..) but it trumps all other Viewfinders I know easily.

I sell purely for financial reasons, when my funds would settle mid or long termn, I'd buy a black MP back in a heartbeat.
 
I always think it's much better to decide what works best for you, and then act upon it. I wasted a lot of money and time in my younger days following the advice of some of the Pro photographers I worked with - who always seemed to recommend the camera they used, and couldn't (or wouldn't) accept that something else might work just as well (or better) for someone else!

Having said all that, I've owned many Leicas over the years and today my Leica MP is one year old, and I absolutely love it. I can't think of any better Leica - for me!!

I wouldn't have an MP if it wasn't for the 0.58 finder.
Not when they cost 3 M6 or 4 M2's...
But with my glasses, the 0.58x is a godsend, and the gap with an M6TTL 0.58+RF patch upgrade is errr.... less important, so I spoiled myself with one a few years ago.
 
I am happy for those of you who enjoy the Leica MP.
I believe it is a good camera like any Leica.

Let's all load up lots of film and shoot!
 
I had the ORIGINAL MP, #302. when the price went over € 20.000,- I sold it.after that I learned to never sell a leica you are comfortable with. I have M4-p, M3 with M4 finder as M3 finders are not available anymore and my started to be very cloudy. Then I have the M8. Propably I will get a "M" depending how the finder works. I have a collection of Russian, Canon and Nikon LTM lenses plus some Voigtländer and Leitz optics. Some of the Russian lenses are "damaged" by purpose with tape, scratches, black marker pen etc. I can shoot "Holga" images with my leicas as well as super sharp images when changing to Voigtländer optics. I am not a "leicaholic", just a guy that likes a camera that works.

I'm back to what I started with - a humble M2.
Maybe I will cull my 35 cron asph too... That will be my next step...

Perhaps I will add another M2 for backup in future...
