I mentioned this to a couple people, Friday we had very serious storms which sheered the top of a tree off in my front yard. The tree landed across my power and cable lines, taking them down and causing incredible surges into my house. I am doing an inventory, and so far I have been very lucky. Everything I had connected through a surge protector survived, including my computer. I have lost 2 DVD players and I think my dry cabinet, but I think I skipped out without much more of a loss.
Well, I feel lucky. I have a high speed Internet connection through my cable service, and that was restored this afternoon. I am back online, it was a tough few days.
And, if you don't have your computer and entertainment stuff plugged into a surge protector, run out and get them. I lost 3, about $40 each, but they saved quite a bit of equipment and much more $$$.

I ran down quickly after the tree came down and the surging started and flipped the main breaker in our box off. Had I waited longer I would have lost the major appliances too. I am lucky that I was home.
I lost neutral at the pole which is why I was getting the surging with the lightning strikes. I still had some small "pops" in the house after I threw the breaker, but it kept most of the bad stuff out.

Does anyone have experience with the $5.00 surge protectors? I have one name brand $25.00 protector which I trust, and 5 of the others which I wonder about.

They are nice. I have almost everything electronic plugged into one...I can't stand to lose my PSP (when on the charger) or my computer.
