incomplete 50mm f1.5 lens

As some of you may know I bought a Canon rangefinder with an incomplete chrome 50mm f1.5 lens on it. The lens is missing the rear lens element group. The front lens group and barrel are perfect. Kevin's Camera will give me $100 for this lens as a trade-in. What would you guys do? Do you think it's a good deal? Would anyone hang on to it in case a trashy lens with a good rear element group comes along?

My questions would be 2 - do you already have one of these intact? and what does a good one go for? If you don't have one, my gut feeling would be to hang onto it, with that inclination increasing directly by how much the complete lens costs. If you have one already, well, then, that's several rolls of film ... 🙂

depends on the trade in deal.
i find kevincameras to be pricy and the 100 buck trade in might be the difference if you buy elsewhere.

if it was on something i really really wanted and did not want to wait for a better deal, if it's on something kinda hard to get or if the item was mint, then i would think about it.
i did retail for awhile and trade ins are always best for the house, not the customer.

My opinion? That paper weight now cost you $100 to keep. Pick out a nice lens and let Mr. Kevin figure out what to do with the cyclops.

Think of the exchange rate. You bought that lens in a kit in Canada right? Kevin is offering $100 as in USD right?

Compare the price of the lens that you would be trading on with what you could buy elsewhere. If he is not charging you a premium for the lens, it is fair.

Myself, I would hold onto the lens. Another with a destroyed front element is bound to pop up on EBay. I know you do not frequent it, but I and others here do. Just wait until I see a Nikkor 5cm F2 with a trashed front group!
