Industar 61 L/D for the RD-1

Just bought this on ebay. Now I have to get a LTM to M adaptor.

Bought it for the lens. Anyone used the Industar 61 on the RD-1? What can I expect?

The FED5 was my first rangefinder and I was positively surprised about the quality of the I-61.

I've used mine with right good success. I posted a few images about a month ago (LINK). Mine back-focuses a wee bit I think, but it could just be me causing the error. The rectangular shade will pop off if you look at it wrong -- as will the lens cap. They seem to be made of the same plastic as those little green army men that I had when I was a kid. I bought an after-market proper lens cap, and every thing is fine (as well as a screw in metal shade).

I have a chrome industar with a focus knob, from 1953, it is extremely sharp. I also had a 90's industar LD and it was way less sharp, I had to add a paper shim to the back ring to get the focus to be accurate. IMO the older fed lenses are way sharper than the newer ones, but results may vary...

I would say this one is definitely a late version. Here's hoping 🙂

I've had the pleasure of several (all late version) I-61L/D's now (was making the mistake of getting one then selling it for awhile. I have a good one I'm keeping) and never had any focus issues. At 2.8 most problems will be lost in the DOF anyway.

The lens itself is a true classic; in many ways it's possible to argue that it was the best design produced in the FSU as by the time you get to the I-61 it is a purely FSU lens. Derived from the classic Tessar, yet it is a unique variation on the theme unlike anything from the west in it's signature. You'll either like it or not - it doesn't tend to be an "Ehh... " kind of lens. I like it and use it very often on my Bessa R.

I have an I-61 that I use on my Bessa R. It's a late version and it's fairly sharp.
I really like the click stops. The early I-61s like the one on my Fed 2 doesn't have click stops.

I also have an I-61 which I bought solely to use on an R-D1. I think I used in just once in the end as the focussing ring is pretty sticky. Image quality isn't too bad but I was much happier with the results I had (and continue to have) from a Jupiter 8 which is the same focal length.

I'd be keen to know how you find this lens John. If you get good results and find it to be a worthy lens then I may try and pick up another.

My I-61 L/D looks exactly like the one in your picture. Build quality not good, pictures excellent. I'll second the warning about the rectangular lens hood.
