looks like Adobe is looking into more Foveon support... if that happens i would upgrade to LR5

Thanks. I stopped following that thread (purely out of time considerations). That would be SUCH great news and would certainly lead me to upgrade, too!

Hey, Keith, in may situations in which framing isn't critical, you don't have to. The VF for the DP2 works well with the focus confirmation lamp just visible out of the corner of your eye (or you can set for audible confirmation).
I agree w/ Jon.. For now during your getting acquainted period, put a ovf on it and treat it like a normal camera.

What are high iso and focusing speeds on the newer DP cameras like? I still use manual focus on my DP1 cause the auto-focus is so horrible in many light situations.

About the same as x100. Look at first couple of post of this thread. High iso start at post 116.What are high iso and focusing speeds on the newer DP cameras like? I still use manual focus on my DP1 cause the auto-focus is so horrible in many light situations.

Gary, just to be clear, in your post above when you say "about the same as the x100" that is in reference to focus speed and not high iso right?
The high iso i.e. >400 on my dp3 leaves a lot to be desired, but I knew that going in plus the results under 400 are jaw dropping.

Yep quite correct. The reference to post 116 is so he can judge for himself about high iso.

Phew... I am not sure where I saw it but some said that the high iso jpegs look like photocopies

They are quite flexible in raw monochrome though.

After maybe. 320, in general the jpgs look like c**p.. Raw is the best way to go on this camera anyway. The only reason I use raw+ jpg is for initial review sorting..

Yesterday i did some lightwight test using hi iso....let me tell you i get almost happy with 800-1600 performance....i want to do another test in real world in the streets...lets see what comes up!

The best camera is one that still works!
The first thing I noticed when I tried a high ISO shot (1600) was the magenta cast ... I gather this is normal?

Lol. Yep. That is the best reason for shooting monochrom .. What magenta.???

A question about my DP2M:
Occasionally I seem to be getting images with the exif data missing from the files. I took about thirty pics the other day and when I was pp'ing the files about four contained no data aside from the camera make and model. It must be something I'm doing but damned if I can work out what?

question here as well: how is the sigma vf-21 viewfinder? i don't think i can use the camera handheld as i can see motion blur at 1/60
i realize the IS in the tiny P&S made a big difference

Here is a nice writeup from Samauri on the subject of ovf's
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127946
I have a rollei ovf on y dp2m and a sigma on the dp1m. The sigma is smaller and a bit squinty in comparison, but quite usable. I like the bigger rollei better..
In terms of other things that can help w/ your problem, have u tried a grip? I use a rrs grip and Jon uses the Franic. Having a firm grip can help here.
A different technic that has been used w/ other cameras in the past is if u are using the neck strap, the strap tension approach and breath control during shutter release.

Hi, i used a voigtlander contour vf...those 1:1 that are used with both eyes open...the brain mixes the bare eye image with the blind image from the eye on the contour VF....and givs you a perfect image 1:1 ...very useful.
I rather use a 50mm than a 40mm vf for this 45mm fov. but of course it´s a matter of taste and getting used.
I had a long tiem ago the sigma vf for the dp1...it was neat but mall...also the framelines disapeared under hard light.
About speed....
I donñt care taht much...30mmm lens can be handheld safely at 1/30...and being a super steady shutter it even can be held succesfully at lower speeds..
I try to grab the camera with my both hands gently and release my breath, in a certain point i press the button...with the VF it´s even easier...i get many good shots that way...

I actually never look at my exif stuff much outside of iso, shutter, and f stop info, so any info outside of that getting messed up, I am clueless. For unprocessed stuff (jpg or tiff16 from spp), I have not seen any problems that I can remember. But I can remember some photo editors wiping out the exif info totally, but I cannot remember which ones they were at the moment.
Aperture is a non-destructive editor, so I have never seen this happen in aperture, most have been files I exported to other editor for work aperture could not handle.

thanks Gary, Monochrom,
i think i found a technique to hold the camera more steady by cradling the lens and hood with my left hand and anchor left elbow into body and wrapping my right hand over it. seems more steady but will need more practice.
will look more into the finders, i've never really used external finders before and not sure if i would prefer a smaller one for portability or larger one for easier viewing, i'll have to go shop around

Ok ... so what is it that turns the Sigma's images into a soupy smeary mess at it's maximum ISO setting of 6400 and also much the same at 3200. Is it the Sigma raw conversion software or is it being done in camera by the processing engine?

good question...when you select hi iso settings you´re are increasing "volume" and then strange things start to happen... i think since sigma is the only one using this technology it´s also the only one making research on how to develop software for foveon sensors...so it gets very slow to achieve results.
