I read today that the pixel count is the same as on the 4s, low light results are improved, the lens is faster, and perhaps better. Has anyone else been waiting to see if the camera is a significant enough improvement over the 4s? I'm on the verge of getting one or the other. Perhaps there is another phone with an even better camera?

AFAIK Nokia has the best cameras, but the rest of the phone is really a matter of taste.

Almost the same camera module, the core parts remain unchanged.
Since magic hasn't been invented yet, it'll offer almost identical performance to the 4S.

Mechanically identical camera to the 4S, according to Apple website specs. Same MP, aperture, etc. I was hoping for a 10 or even 12MP camera from Apple this time, ideally with the lens located in the center of the back phone plate. If it was physically possible, that would open up so many options for after market accessories, not to mention more natural camera ergonomics.

Why would you even consider a 4s? It's only $100 less and you will recoup that when you sell whichever one you buy when you upgrade to whatever in a year or two.
Not that $100 isn't worth considering, but it's not like you won't get it back later...
I've upgraded every iphone and each year it costs me about $100 all in to have the new one. I think that's a very good deal considering how much I use this device/phone/camera/computer/bookreader/gps device etc.
Just food for thought...

D'oh!
I only use the camera on my iPhone 4s to capture shots of white boards and such. The quality is just too low to use for general photography.

The iPhone is my only digital camera. Sure its tiny sensor can't produce hi quality images. But I can take great shots!
