iPhone 7, who's getting it?

Not me. I still use a flip cell phone. Don't see a need for a smart phone either. Everyone on planet Earth could have one, but I still would not buy one. Why run with the herd when one can be an individualist?

Well.. A member of the smart phone herd can sit on the beach waiting for an email rather than still sitting in the office 😉

What's missing from the new iPhone is a microphone input jack. ...

I wonder if Apple even understands their market, that creative types like to use one ecosystem, and now they've just made it much more difficult.

Why not use a digital mic? A lot cleaner sound than a analog mini jack!

The Shure MOTIV MV88 Digital Stereo Condenser Microphone for iOS for instance:

Or the iRig Mic Field - stereo digital field recording iOS microphone. Or use a mixer, if the mic is remote wireless.

Not sure how a flip cell phone is individualist... How many millions of those things sold?

i've been snowboarding, going to the beach, walk in the rain since the Iphone 4 and never had any issues.

I live in a ski town and snowboard for part of my job as a photographer, I have had various issues, will be getting a 256GB 7 regular in matte black.

Speaking of iPhones and snowboarding, I love everything about my iphone 6 except for the fact that it really dies *quick* in the cold if the slightest breeze is involved.

Hope the 7 is better in this regard.

"Camera companies, like traditional phone manufacturers, dismissed the iPhone as a toy when it launched, in 2007. Nokia thought that the iPhone used inferior technology; the camera makers thought that it took lousy pictures. Neither thought that they had anything to worry about. Of course, neither anticipated the value of having a computer in your pocket, and what the camera folks, especially, didn’t anticipate was that, as the photographer Chase Jarvis puts it, the best camera is the one that’s with you."

For my work I'm getting one.

So the jet black. How many more years till they make a brass version with black paint so we can get brassing going. 😉 Or they'll just have Correspondent Edition with pre-brassing and charge extra $300.

Have you tried putting it in your pocket and wrapping it with something to keep it warm and to shelter it from the breeze? I did this with my Leica when I took it skiing one day and I was able to take pictures the whole day. I was really pleased it didn't die on me.

I walk about a mile and a half to two miles one way to work every day from my apartment in Brooklyn and had this same issue with the 6 since the day I got it (release day). If I put my phone in my pocket in my jacket at 100% when I left my apartment it would be down to 50% or so if I even used it once when the temps got below 40 degrees. Now my battery is garbage so I think I'm gonna buy one of the battery replacement kits on Amazon and replace it and hopefully I'll be good to go for another year or two.

Have you considered rubbing your iPhone vigorously against your chest?

I had this issue too
The batteries are really temperature sensitive
They do come back when warmed up, but it is a pain to not be able to use outside
On an average winter day in the Midwest
Not even average, I've had 49 degree days were the phone ceases to function after 3 minutes outside my pocket

End of battery rant

I replaced my iPhone 5 battery and one in my wife's phone and it breathed new life into both phones. I got them from iFixit.com along with the basic tools. Their directions were spot on. I've also got some replacement/ upgrade part for he MacBook Pro from them that works well.

Back OT, I'm going to wait till they put the camera from the 7 into the body of the SE. I know the battery would last as long, but the size of the 6/7 feels too big, though the larger screen might be easier to read (older eyes).

I'm thinking that would become my main digital camera.

Apple is currently holding thousands in bondage, due to a special hidden chip implanted in random Apple devices.

The captives sit at home in their basements, writing snarky comments about Samsung on CNBC.

I think it works the opposite way. Samsung devotees (that is, Apple haters) are the kings of snark. iPhone users are too busy having fun.

There are much less expensive wirelsess buds available now. (Gf got a nice pair from amazon for ($59).... They sound good and the mic works great.

I wonder how much "better" the apple airpods will be. ($159).
$160 is a bit od dough for something so easy to lose or damage.
I'm not cheap about my ears but... I don't think it's smart money considering the vulnerability of such a device.

Well they are a lot better. They are not passive devices. The proprietary connection technology has nothing to do with Bluetooth. This means they pair quickly and reliably. Maybe I'm just unlucky, but I've never had Bluetooth speakers/headphones/earbuds that would pair quickly or even paired at all when I changed devices.

EarPods are also sophisticated device controls... like Amazon's Alexa/Echo system. They are the first generation of devices that are intended to be the Google Glasses for your ears. Of course we all know how well Google Glasses caught on.

Still I'm not very interested myself. I rarely use headphones or earbuds. But after reading about the technology I'm wondering if my rare use of headphones and earbuds is because the wires are a mess and, or Bluetooth connectivity issues drive me nuts. Anyway $160 seems over the top so it's moot (well if they fit perfectly and sound great...).
