Is getting a Leica SCNOO worth it?

How about you buy one of the Canon rangefinders with built-in rapidwinder, like VI-T. They are not that expensive, you would be able to judge if you like it or not. Also, they will take your screwmount lenses. If you decide that you like it, then buy SCNOO and sell or keep Canon.

Roger, I'm not pretending to be HCB who took 8K shots in two weeks at some of his magnificent trips. Nor I'm GW who was taking it on eight rolls per each block. But if have to take it on this frame rate it is taken with DSLR.
Most of my photo walks will lasts on one roll. One roll per day if I'm on the trip where I could take pictures. Or one roll per week or two weeks if I have my camera with me every regular day. Yet, I have two pictures threads on RFF with thousands of views and I have more frames I could print.
I never missed the shot, because of single stoke of index finger or advance lever was not fast enough. But most of the time I'm missing it because it wasn't advanced in advance 🙂.
I have zero interest in 18mm, they as fetish to me as fish-eye indeed. GW used 28mm and find 24mm to be too wide for him. I'm not as genius as GW is, 35mm is fine for me to cover it all.
Half-case is for protection. On M-E I already have one of the button letters faded, due to constant contact with my belly 🙂

Well, yes. HA HA indeed. I've owned the VI-T and didn't like it. Ugly, heavy, and more like a Leicavit/RapidWinder than a SCNOO.

I am always puzzled by people who say, "Why don't you by a cheap [and nasty or at least markedly inferior] Canon or fixed-lens RF or indeed SLR and see if that inspires you to buy a Leica?"

(1) Nothing you say answers the questions I raised

(2) Everything of which you don't personally approve is "fetishist"? Okay, you're a half-case fetishist.

(3) What has your bulging gut to do with anything? I've not used cases/half cases with ANY cameras since I realized in the 1970s that they are expensive, bulky and (in the strictest sense) a waste of time.

Oh: and I'm not pretending to be anyone. I'm just me, who has been using Leicas since 1969.

I own Canon VI-T, and I have handled some screwmount Leicas with SCNOO attached. I agree with your opinion of Canon being different from Leicas, however its viewfinder is much better than any pre IIIg screwmount ones. OP had started a lot of different threads about purchasing a variety of different cameras and lenses. I am simply suggesting for him to try another camera with triger wind. I own VI-T, so I suggest VI-T. Whats another camera to try With prices of Canon rangefinders these days?

P.S. I do not care for trigger winder anyway.
 
Also, SCNOO is markedly nicer in use compared to either Canon or Leicavit. I still didn't care for it. I am glad I have tried it with Canon first, because it stopped me from looking for one from Leica.

Dear Sam,

Better viewfinder, no question. Numerous cameras have, compared with just about any screw-mount Leica except a IIIg (and I'd not argue strongly for that one). But (as I've repeatedly said) the only reasons not to buy a SCNOO are because you don't want one, which is perfectly legitimate and the reason you give (not liking trigger winds), and because you can't afford one. I might however add a third reason, applicable to those who have never owned a SCNOO, Leicavit or Canon VI-T: you don't actually know what you are talking about.

Absolutely!
And I'm constantly working on its shape. Started on Christmas with stuffed turkey and by now shape has been dramatically improved by stuffing it with dumplings due to the current lunar New Year.
 
There are many more reasons to not buy a SCNOO than there are for buying one.

makes a Barnack much Larger
makes a Barnack much Heavier
Prone to break
Expensive for what it offers (perhaps 1fps at best)

Perhaps acquire one of the Nicca/Tower screw mount bodies that have wind levers, those are a lot cheaper and arguably as fast. Some of them have flip up doors for M style film loading.

One sold a few days ago on the bay for $100, another in January for $78, both in working condition.

Says someone who has actually used and owned a SCNOO as well as SYOOM, Leicavits, and Rapidwinders 🙂

Yeah... The strange thing is that it really doesn't take that long, if you actually care about your subject matter. Knowing what you're talking about helps too. (This is not aimed at you!)

I'm not really all that great an advocate of SCNOO. But (unlike many in this thread, I suspect) I've used them, in the days when I could afford them and shot with screw mount instead of Ms, and I still stick to my original thesis. Don't buy one unless (a) you want one and (b) you can afford one. If you want one and can afford it, why not buy one?
