Is There Anything More Boring Than Scanning??

I'm scanning about 1000 frames of 35mm with my Coolscan V ED, one little strip at a time.

Good Lord, this is tedious.

Yes, the one thing that bores me more than scanning:

Spot removing the dust after scanning- because you forgot to clean the scanner bed and there is no way you are going to re-scan.

So, at least you are not scanning on a flat bed scanner!

Good luck and much patience,

Matt

Actually, I enjoy it (but I wouldn't want to scan 1000 frames over a short period). It's almost as fun as developing film or making prints in the darkroom.

Do you really have 1,000 worthwhile images? Why not edit the number down to a reasonable level simply using a light box and loupe?

I recently scanned the results of 25 rolls of film in less than 2 hours. And I scanned each frame individually to insure each got the effort it deserved. You see, I only scanned a total of 26 negatives because I spent 3-4 hours in the preliminary edit process. Ultimately I ended up with 10 photos (from 11 full days shooting). But nobody wants to see more than your top 10 anyway.

If you do need all those 1000 frames for some reason and they are whole rolls, get a roll feeder, that way at least you can do it unattended.

I hate scanning!

Really...I hate it

I read a comment from Bob a while back and started to apply a triage to my scanning. I dont really go for the top 10 but I preview and spend the extra time deciding what might be worth scanning either cuz its good or cuz its bad. I need to see my bad as much as my good.

After originally reading Bobs comment a while back I bought a small light box and I do go over every roll with a loupe. My eye is slowly learing to see the negative and making the process even faster.

Another thing I do to speed it up is all 35 is scanned at 800 and 120 is scanned at 1200. I consider them all test scans to look at and evaluate. When I find a few I want to print it is no big deal to go back and scan at a higher resolution for printing.
