I'm on the lookout for a contax g2. I don't know much about what they are selling for right now. I want one before I go on vacation in february.

I found this one on craigslist, does this look like a reasonable deal? Or should I try to talk it down. The price is in canadian dollars.

Thanks

Go to KEH.com and see what the prices of the individual body and lenses are. They should have each item for sale. Add them up.

Then factor in the CDN to US$ conversion and some factor to account for KEH being a known ethical seller and everything they sell having a 60 day warranty.

Compare the two. Realize the selling price is always determined by just how motivated is the seller to sell vs. how motivated the buyer is to buy. I have sat on both sides of that table.

I was about to recommend KEH as a reference, as well. Bob's got it all.
Also, KEH's ratings are very conservative, benefitting the buyer. An EX is likely to be as nice or better than a lot of private sellers' "like new." I would have to see photos of the gear from a private seller before even considering it.

Also, be aware that the AF system is not a given to be calibrated perfectly. You need to take some test shots. ToCAD can calibrate it, but that's an additional expense. With KEH, you could try a simple exchange of the body.

seems fair to me :)

I checked out the prices on keh and elswhere it seems to be a fairly average deal depending on the shape of the gear. Maybe I'll check I out and shoot a test roll.

I paid $850 for a similar set-up from FleaBay earlier in 2010. G2 body, 28 + 35 + 90 lenses, TLA flash unit, aluminum case. I thought I was getting a bargain, but of course, it's eBay. The seller's description "EX+" condition turned out to be false. The LCD frame counter on the top of the G2 body is cracked and unreadable, and the lens mount on one of the lenses does not seat properly to the body. Also, the black plastic housing at the lens base was completely cracked and missing.

In the end, the functionality of the camera is only mildly impacted by the faults -- the most annoying being the inability to see what frame I'm on when I'm shooting a roll of film. I decided to not raise a stink about the camera's misrepresentation because I still got a good deal.

In retrospect I think I would have been much happier paying a bit of a premium and getting a G2 system from KEH. I have bought a few items from them over time and never EVER have I been disappointed.

in your case, Kranston, if you're able to see the camera first-hand (you don't mention if the guy is selling in your area) than I'd go see it and try it out -- at least turn it on, change lenses and inspect the lens mounts, etc.

is it a private sale, it seems to be overpriced in my eyes;
is it a dealer, selling with warranty, may be - if you want one immediately and no time to wait for a better buy

I have until February so there's no rush. I will check it out and try to talk the guy down. If that doesn't work I'll just keep my eye out, or go with keh or a dealer

That's closer to price range of "Black" kit

That's closer to price range of "Black" kit

The Black G2, w black lenses sell for a premium over the chrome (titanium) look.

A set just sold on eBay in that configuration, and in chrome, PLUS THE 21mm Lens, for $1600.

The 21mm lens alone has sold on eBay a number of times in the last 60 days for from $600 to almost $1000 (Just that lens). So the kit you are looking at would be somewhat overpriced without such a lens.

Black kits sold much higher (3 or 4 of them) from $2000 to over $3000.

I sold a very nice G1, plus the three lenses and some filters for $600.

If you are a member at eBay, you can look in the completed listings and review the SOLD prices for the last 60 days.

Overall, balancing these sales out, and looking a the high volume of Contax G1/G2 and lenses on eBay at this time, I'd shoot for $900 to $1000 on the equipment you described. There are a high number available on eBay.

I've had three Contax G1's and multiple lens that I bought on eBay. All of them have been in excellent condition. Does anyone actually ever shoot these cameras?

I know I was somewhat unimpressed and sold them all, with little added usage on them. I feel personally, they are over-rated as a camera, although I would like to try a couple of the lenses on my Olympus micro 4/3 cameras.

Since it's local sale, and you can inspect it in person before commiting, I think it's reasonable deal. It saves you on shipping and the custom duties. If its truly like new, I think it's worthy, though you can try to bring it down to $1,200, let's say. Don't wait till February to buy your traveling camera. You'll need some time and rolls to get comfortable shooting with G2.
