I recently bid on an M3 on oBoy and lost to a higher bid. Almost 4 weeks later now, I geta "second chance offer" since the winning bidder didn't blah blah blah. The "link" to the listing takes me to a legitimate looking page, including url, and states the listing expires on May, 3rd, 2006, and has a button for "Buy now" listing the maximum price I had bid when the original listing ran.
BUT when I go to the home page of oBoy, and enter a search for "Leica M3 SS Mint" (as in the title of the suspicious offer) the item is never 'found' by the search engine.
I have sent eBay the details (headers etc), but is it possible that when one makes a "second chance offer" the page it links to is ONLY seen by the few who had bid originally ?
Sorry for long post, BTW, the seller has a legitimate shop in Toronto, and an almost 100 % feedback on over a 1000 transactions.

No. Not legit. Don't even risk it.

Go to "My Ebay" page and check the list of Items you "Didn't Win"...scroll down to find the actual item and find out if there is a highlight area right under it with the second chance offer prompt.
If you do get a legit "second chance offer" it will only be available to you thus WON'T show up in any listing searches.
Hope this helps,
Kiu

Thanks Kiu. That was very helpful. did go to 'My eBay', and highlighted under the item on the "Didn't win" list was this "Second chance offer". So, looks like its legit...

Maybe I'll call up the Bricks and Mortar store and see if they can confirm it, but I'm still a bit nervous. I'm probably not going to take up the offer, since its in Canada, and that could add additional $ in Customs- at least possibly.

I did buy once a set of diopters as a second chance offer. The winning bidder simply refused to reply to e-mails and seemed to have disappeared of the face of the earth.

Who knows... maybe he got in a car accident, wound up in a hospital, who knows, but I got a nice set of diopters for less than $30, total.

If it shows up on your eBoy, it's legit. Just square the details away with the seller and, if you want it, go for it. You don't have to accept this offer.

Second Chance Offers are legit, and if, like you say, it shows up on your My Ebay, your as safe as you would be if you had won with your original high bid.

It is Legit...I have bought stuff from Canada and there is NO customs duties to be paid.
Was it cheap? Not that I know any Leica prices.

If it shows up there, you are sort of safe. . . .but Ebay gives the buyer a hard time if they request a refund from a seller. I tried to get a refund on something I bought that arrived unusuable (a set of DVDs that were only partially written, scratched, etc). They were copies of the movies I thought I was buying in legit form. Well, Ebay told me that the seller was unwilling to offer a refund. . . and things stretched out for a bit, and I stopped hearing from both. So, no money back, and no product.

Ebay will NOT just offer you a refund if the item doesn't show up. They'll put you through the wringer and try hard to forget you.

It is probably legit. As a seller I've had one or two deadbeat bidders such that I tried the Second Chance Offer tool. Hasn't worked for me because most times the "losing" bidders have since moved on and bought other similar gear.

Caution is wise - but some of the net nannies here have too many anti-eBay axes to grind. You could have a good opportunity here and it's "worth" an e-mail to the seller.

Yeah, I once got a second chance on a couple of filters from Olympus' Ebay. No problem from them. But the price of filters is not exactly the price of Leicas... soooo... My moto is "never spend more at Ebay than you're willing to lose completely and walk away from." ... WHICH, BTW, it is a moto that I am personally sweating bullets over even as we type.

Agreed with George above. A few emails to seller might well be worth your time.

Every time I shop on ebay it's a case of 'let it ride'.

Just like going to Vegas.

Interesting side note- since its an offer only to me, and will expire May 3rd,'06, I have time to explore and check with seller etc. , with no competition from other buyers ! Its seems to be a good price ($1400) for a Mint M3, serial > 1million, with excellent pictures. Any chance the seller can withdraw it before then ? (Now I'm getting greedy !)

Under eBay rules, a seller can withdraw an item at any time for any reason. [Err...the seller does have to pay the eBay fees though 😉 ]

For $1400 there ought to be a lens attached to the body.

I couldn't agree more- actually 2 lenses, a case and some film would be even better. But,
its a good price if you compare buying something similar (Mint, serial > 1million)from KEH, Ritzcam, Kevin Cameras, and many others...
In either case, since I may not be buying it, this price issue may be academic...

If YOU think it is a good deal then YOU decide. If you follow the "advice" of folks here you'll never buy anything because they will tell you about that time when someone got this great deal....... 😀

OK, you are the Leicaholic and YOU should know what a good price on a mint M3 suppose to be. I have a few questions before I comment further.
Do you have another M3?
Have you been checking prices the last 3 months?
Are you sure you want M3?

When a seller issues "second chance offer" one has the option of doing a 1,3,5 or 7day offer to the Next higher bidder of one's choosing(it doesn't have to be the next hi bidder).
Were you the runner up?
Can we have the auction number?
Now, I don't know if the price is good but judging by the length of the second chance offer I say you have a pretty good shot of negotiating...
