You may find that the camera is quite cheap to repair with a little luck. I had exactly this model camera in which the low speeds on the shutter would fail to operate intermittently. My local camera guy knew exactly what the problem was - said it was common with Canons and adjusted it on the spot with a few minutes work. Of course this might not be your issue and your camera might also require general servicing.
