My two cents: Simon makes a mistake in thinking that 'everyone' knows what is going on in Turkey/Istanbul. Most people don't. This said, I find it an interesting set of pictures. Some, where people show placards with a text, may need some clarifications, either in the introduction of a series, or individually.

For some reason the photo that intrigues me the most is the one of the pigeon on a string -- that's a story.

The mystery of the pigeon on a string. On Sundays, some distance from the usual tourist haunts, they hold an outdoor pigeon market, homing pigeons, tumblers, and such. The sellers will test fly the bird for a prospective buyer, they tie a string to its leg, launch it and it flies into the air, only to be hauled back by the string. This one apparently landed back on the ground instead of being caught. A great place to wander with a camera.
