The Hotel Pennisula is a great place to stay. Located just 5 minutes from the Blue Mosque. Breakfast on the roof with wonderful view of the Sea of Marmara. People are very friendlly. Istanbul is a great walking city. Get a good guide book and read up on the city before you go. The main market is great and you can just get lost in it. I'd love to go back someday.

Enjoy!

Anywhere is good, I agree with kieth. Hotel is very central. Just walk down the street and take pictures. I havnt been there for 25 years. Now I want to go back!

i can hang around the galata bridge area and the yeni cami mosque area all day just to shoot.... its a great place for street shooting

If Semrich (Richard) logs in he can give you some insight as he lives in Turkey (and, I believe, Istanbul itself).

Cheers,
Dave

Where does your conference take place? It is important because istanbul is a very big city and transportation will be a problem for you. I recommend look for a hotel near your conference hotel.

thank you very much t all for the avices....
For Tylan....
the place where the conference will be is not so important. I was thinkink to stay in 2 different hotels: one for my "tourist" days and another one (possibly near the conference location) for the conference days (the conference will commit me for the all days).
thanks again

And, just for curiosity, wich camera/s and lens/s do you carry with you at istanbul?

Been to Istanbul three times and it's one of my favorite places on earth. I don't like the touristy center for very long. Too much hassle and too many touts (though all are polite if persistent). So I like to take a ferry to the Asian side and wander around there. Why pay for a tour boat? While you are there, find a non-touristy hammam for a Turkish bath. Or take the city ferry that goes around the golden horn and get off somewhere up the horn, doesn't matter where. Real neighborhoods here with residents and local businesses and very few tourists. Istanbul is a place to wander, though I'm always drawn to the waterfront. I also prefer the yeni cami/spice market/galata bridge area to the blue mosque/aya sofya/grand bazaar area...the streets between this district and the grand bazaar are also wonderful, very workaday and filled with tailor shops and bakeries. Enjoy!

I live here in Istanbul, I don't stay very often in the hotels, though I'm familiar with one that I can easily recommend, the Rast Hotel. Clean, modern and located in the Sultan Ahmet area about 200 meters from a tram stop. Here is their link:

You can be comfortable photographing in any area of the city, and as you can see many members here are happy to share their experience from their own visits.

I always carry one lens one camera. Currently i am using Leica M2 and Summicron 35mm. Rearly, i want to take landscape or portrait and then i am taking Mamiya TLR C330 + 80 mm with me.

I am living istanbul and i don't have any specific opinion about hotels. This weekend i ate at the terrace of a hotel and as i saw it looks very pretty. Its web site is http://www.regencysuitesistanbul.com/
