I was out shooting with my lens that I got from KEH last night. The Nikon 5cm f1.4 S mount lens. I was writing down every exposure in my moleskin notebook. Shot the last frame and accidently advanced the film. I heard a snap. The film had come undone from the take up spool in the camera. Luckily the guys at my local camera shop let me use their dark room. I was able to rewind about half the roll into the film canister. The first half had frames from the Helios 103 that I had adjusted for the Nikon RF. Back to the drawing board.
I'm a nit annoyed that it happened but glad the guys from the shop let me use their dark room.

Is this common for a nikon rangefinder or was it a defect with the film canister?

Which film btw?

Can't tell you if it's a common thing or not with Nikon RF's. I have only run about 5 rolls though mine. It always feels really tight at the end though. Tighter than any other camera actually. Maybe it was a film defect. The film I was using was Fuji Superia 400. I have used it for years without any issue until today. First time for everything though.

Only asking because if it happens to me I'd like to know...

Couldn't you have left it in the camera, waited until you got home, and then loaded the whole roll right onto a developing reel inside a changing bag?

No, it's not common w/a Nikon RF. Much more likely to be a film defect or a case of you not knowing your own superstrength! 😉

But seriously, I don't think it's inconceivable that you had about 3/4th of a frame left on the roll & you forced the advance just enough to break it off the canister spool. It happened to me a few months ago w/a roll of Reala in my Kodak Ektra, which has an unusual left-handed film advance (among many other things) that doesn't give me the same kind of ergonomic feedback as regular right-handed knob or lever wind cameras. I noticed that the film rewind seemed to be a little too frictionless, but still decided to open the back & lost the last 6 frames or so. I just went home & transferred the film into a canister in a changing bag & then took it to Chrome, making sure to tell them what happened so that nobody would accidentally open the canister outside the darkroom.

I'm off to NYC tomorrow morning for a long weekend. So deciding if I want to take my Nikon SP wit the 5cm f1.4 lens or the 5cm f2.8 Elmar Version I on my M6. So wanted to see images from the Nikkor lens to decide. Both lenses have been acquired in the last 24 hrs to 3 wks.
Oh and I don't develop color film at home, only B&W.

Ha, I'm going up to NYC for the weekend, too (BoltBus). Debating which cameras to bring & 1 of my SPs (late chrome w/titanium shutter) is a possibility . . .

This is too much! I'm also taking Boltbus. I joined their website so I could be in group A for seating.
It will either be my Black Nikon SP with Nikkor 5cm f1.4 and Nikkor 2.8cm f3.5 lenses or the the Leica M6 with 5cm f2.8 Elmar and CV 40mm f1.4.

If you're on the 08:30, I'll see you in the AM (turns out 2 other photo buddies from DC will also be going up there this weekend, so looks like we might be having quite the shooting party). I'll make sure we won't be "wearing" the same cameras. That just wouldn't do. 😛

I know I'll have the M8 so as not to add too much to my monumental scanning backlog. It's the film body that I still have to decide on. Could go big w/the Medalist II or small w/the Pen FV, but will probably end up somewhere in between.

I will be on the 9:30 bus. Have fun in NYC. I hope to get to the MOMA. They have some Irving Penn stuff in the lobby. I did see his exbibit at the National Gallery a few years back. I think at the end of the month the MOMA has a Bresson exhibit.

I haven't been to the "new" MoMa, but might check it out. Will certainly be hitting the Arbus/Eggleston show @ Cheim & Read:

Why only half? I have had this happen a few times over the years and I have never had any problem recovering the whole film.

I was thinking the same thing. There seemed to be some kind of obstruction that would not allow any more film back into canister. Maybe it was the piece of film that connects to spool inside the film canister taking up more space. No clue but did not work.

Searching through the cobwebs of my mind, I seem to recall this happening to me twenty or more years ago. I didn't want to lose any shots so I kept pulling it out carefully and reinstering it until it all got in. It felt like it was snagging on something inside the cassette. In your case where it was just a test roll, that may not have seemed so important. I always carried at least on of the black plastic outer canisters after it happened the second time, but I don't think it was ever an issue after that. Enjoy your NYC trip.

Also, check your PM at your leisure.

Not the same thing... but I had one problem with a roll of Superia ISO 400 and my Nikon F5. The camera advanced the film, the film got stuck INSIDE the canister and didn't move... I was certainly glad that the F5 has a manual rewind option with a small crank. Had it happened in my F100 I would have been forced to go home and try to recover the film in my changing bag...

Must be an ocassional problem with Fuji canisters.
