It gets worse

Hi Ash

Have you looked upwards?
Is there space in the loft?
Didn't Dad always want to board it in and put in a retractable ladder?
Ask Mum!
She probably remembers!
Well - perhaps just dreaming for you.
You could go over to all digital!!!!

I think you need to ask the obvious questions there, Ash:
What are these places doing with the(now) surplus gear?
and
Who would be willing to take it off their hands?
Rob

J! Wash your mouth out with soap!! ALL Digital?!
I'm trying to escape ANY digital!!! :D

Umm well the loft COULD be an idea, since one entrance to it is in my room as well but I'm not sure how easy the getting in and out thing will be - the plan was to fill it with all the junk I no longer wanted in my room, instead it'll have to be emptied to become a darkroom!! Thanks for the idea, I might try that one :)

rebiemer, I'm afraid that the two public/closed darkrooms may have sold off or *gasp* thrown away the equipment long ago!

You can easily install a ladder that retracts into the loft space if there is enough headroom there, or, there are concertina type ladders as well. Some ladders even attach to the opening door.

Go look see. Trip to the DIY emporia of Swindon might be useful.

The other alternative is to have a cellar!

Something tells me I'll be sat cross-legged or kneeling to do prints up there! On the plus side I can find the hot water pipes and place my film/print drying racks close to them :D

Hmm.... attacking the concrete foundations of the house to build a cellar... I wouldn't mind digging up the garden and making a bomb-shelter darkroom though!!

:p

[Can't wait to handle one from someone in the UK. I was disappointed there wasn't a demo in any of the camera shops I've been in so far.]

Was it you who said this about the M8? :p :D

Keep your enemies closer, Keith :D

That'll teach you to pick on me! Anyway if you did ever get an M8 I would know you had been converted to the "dark side' :D

Ash,
Recalling some of the, um, conflicts you've had with your dad, it seems like black out curtains over windows/doors might be a better choice? Or a really crazy thought just occurred: You've said you want a car. How about a van? Black out the back and you could have just enough space. Depending on how tall the interior is compared to whatever enlarger you have/get. And it's portable. And you could make a really big pinhole camera....

Hey, I'm more excited about my Contax purchase than I was about either Leica... I'm already on one dark side ;)

So when are Zeiss releasing a digital? :D

rbiemer - yes, my dad and I do clash, so Im trying to be as reasonable as possible, since I've been moaning since july "where's my darkroom?" ;)

I'd never be forgiven if I bought a van!! I'd love to though, fold out bed one side, and darkroom the other. Hell, why not buy a lorry and have a studio one end? :D

Another thought Ash:

How about a camper van?
Get an old VW one and you have the classic wheels you want as well.

looks like i need to consider the cost of the darkroom before I work out the cost of mobility. The VW isn't really an option - those things rarely hit 50mph!

Ash, that's a Copal-Leica in your Avatar eh? Pretty cool, they're supposed to be quite rare.

I had to fight with my boyfriend to get space in our condo for a darkroom. I've commandeered a large walk-in closet about 4 X 6 feet, and put in a 4x5" enlarger, a Fujimoto CP-31 processor, benches, tempered water, drain and vent fans for the world's smallest color darkroom. It's definitely worth it. Fight the good fight!

In fact it's a normal focal plane cloth shutter. The copal shutters are very expensive!

I'm hoping it'll be worth it too! :)

I made a plank of 100x60 that I install on my bathtub. Place for 3 trays 8x10, and the small UAP-510 russian enlarger that fits into it's own small suitcase.

I do unfold/refold the lot when needed!

I used to argue with my father over such things...so I left to join the service.
Of course, many years and a thousand miles away from my father, he's no longer an issue. Now I face a far more implacable foe...my wife.

The moral of the story? Enjoy now...it just gets worse from here.

:)
