It all started around 5am last Friday. I got up, made my coffee, fed and took care of the dogs and cats, then sat down to read the news and see what I missed the night before on RFF.

I have been trying to not do this as much as I normally do, but I popped over to ebay to see what goodies were around too. Well, I never thought it would lead to this. My my, I saw a Minolta MD 50/1.7 closing in minutes with no bids on it. Description said it was “Very Excellent” and the opening bid was only $4.99. Well, when I got to work I learned the lens was mine, and sent off payment, $10.99 with shipping. Not bad I thought, not bad at all. Hey, I have been very good with my camera outlays recently so $10, what’s the big deal?

When I got home Monday, things seemed even better as there was a small parcel waiting for me in the mail box. Won Friday, delivered Monday, who is better than me?

Everyone I guess because this is where my troubles started. A quick inspection revealed a dent on the lens barrel, and a cotton ball of fungus inside the lens elements. Well, it was only $10, but I decided to notify the seller of my disappointment and requested a refund. The apology was almost immediate, she does not know much about camera equipment and was just selling off stuff she found around the house said the seller. Rhetorically she asked, “How does a lens get fungus in it? Oh well, I will send a refund, why don’t you go ahead and throw the lens away.”

A red flag? Not at all. The refund was in my PayPal account yesterday. It is only $10, but I feel good that I said something to the seller.

It is only $10.

Did I mention that I have been good about spending money on camera equipment recently? But there has to be something I can do with that $10. Something, with only $10. Something, festering in my mind for two days now. I need, I want something don’t I? Just $10, I can’t get into trouble with $10 right.

It is only $10.

OH THE GAS!!!!!

Now I have searches saved for Summitars, Summarits and Elmars. I NEED A LEICA IIIc!!! A nice looking Canon 100/3.5 showed up on ebay this morning. I peeked in the most recent Lens Work, maybe something 4x5? Yeah, a Speed Graphic, can’t afford a Wista you know.

IT IS ONLY $10.

who wants it? 🙁

My personal record on this type of lens purchase is about 1:3. One in every three is a good lens. As long as you are getting refunds, you should try two more times. You will likely get a good lens and have $30 to ask this same question with.

Trust me or not, years ago I paid €25 locally for the same lens with some fungus on it. Not a cotton ball but indeed a clearly visible spider.

That said, it's one of the sharpest lenses I've used 🙂

I must've lucked out on gettting a good one of these, from an RFF member, just for the cost of shipping. It's really sharp, and blows away the 50/2 Minolta that I had been using. It also came with a Vivitar 135, my only long lens, and I love that too.

Put the $10 toward film, or does it have to be gear? How about bidding on a Kodak brownie or Hawkeye? After shipping you'll still have enough for a roll of Tri-X.

(I just bought some Tri-X 100 for my Hawkeye this morning)

whoa, that's the one, and it's apparently a better lens in your hands than mine. Yep, JohnM hooked me up good. I got two great lenses, basically for the price of Priority Mail.
But I now understand how steady you have to be with the longer lens. I think I can shoot the CV35/2.5 after a whole pot of coffee and still get a crisp shot, but the 135 is touchy in my hands.

I just got back a bunch of skateboard pics I shot with the 135. I'll link those here this weekend, and put up the Rapid Omega ones here.

If you only payed $10 for it would it not be a nice experiment to take it apart and clean it.. So if youcan do it then you have a nice lens. if you can not do it then you have only lost $10 and gained the knowledge that ,that is not the way you clean fungus out of a lens?

Having a dark side, I am wondering if I can make a magnifying glass that I can use to teach my son how to cook bugs with.

Dark side, Ralph... You're already leading all the armies of the obscure forces and you haven't burned your body yet! 😱

You know... like D*rth, the heavy-breathing guy! 😉
