after much heavy breathing and deep sighing, i took one long deep breath and adjusted the vertical alignment on my canon p.

i normally dread this kind of thing cause i have 10 thumbs and all of them are clumsy.

i am quite pleased and very happy that the p is back to normal.

now, if i could just stop shaking...

My CLE needs this too. At least I think it does. Focused at infinity, it doesn't line up vertically (?). Good for you Joe! Congrats!

In part due to your enthusiasm for the Canon and especially the P, and from all the other good information gleaned here, I eventually jumped in and have bought one. Now I'm beginning to understand why you like it so much - nothing else I've touched compares with that viewfinder. I don't mind pulling any of my other cameras apart, but the P is so Perfect that I'd be terrified of spoiling it. Thanks.

There are many things you can do yourself with a little confidence!

Hi Ray,
the CLE is tricky. I just did it last night. You know the procedure? Little cover is easily taken off with (duct) tape. 😉
Then there are two terribly small screws that are tightened quite firmly to avoid shaking loose. The 'top' one (closest to the front) is for vertical alignment. Clockwise turning got it moving the patch up for me.
The lower (backside) one does the horizontal adjustment. They did not influence eachother with me.

Golden Rule: Never take machinery apart more than you need. This applies for camera's and old Volvo's alike.

My CLE should now even focus the 135! That wil be tricky because of the small baselength though....

hey joe,
what are the implications of the vertical alignment being slightly off?? if the horizontal is good does the off vertical just present an annoyance or is focus going to be terminally off. my P fell off a low table onto a wood floor and now my verticle is clearly off........................................
