Actually that's not true. High heat can melt grease and lubricants. They get runny and go where they are not supposed to go.

In the Phoenix summer, you can tell the drivers without AC. You can see their scowl because their windows are open, and you just have to assume they are armed and dangerous. Give them the right-of-way at all times.
Is it true that in AZ, if you carry a gun, the law requires that it MUST be loaded? That way, if you pull a gun in public, cops can justifiably shoot you down? I've heard that more than once, and I have no idea whether or not it's true.

As a frequent traveler to tropical destinations, I am more worried about the hot/high humidity - AC environment changes...

Better to keep things in the trunk, I think, than in the passenger compartment. You get the greenhouse effect with the car windows, and things get really hot. But the trunk is a lot cooler by comparison.
