I sold my R-D1 in 2008 or 2009 - I bought it new as soon as they were available in the UK (late 2004 / very early 2005). I regretted selling it. So, as of a week last Monday, I have another, bought from an RFFer, in fantastic condition. Happily been shooting with it since - with a CV 35 2.5 P1. Whilst I appreciate that if you need to print really big, then 6MP is probably too little, I do have a two feet wide print on my wall that is perfectly good as well as several 15x10s. This is a seriously cool camera and a pleasure to use.

Fujifilm never claimed its cameras are rangefinders... misinformed RFF members and reviewers did.

I don't know about the range-finder renascence, but we seem to have a RD1 renascence ... perhaps if we can't get Joanna Lumley to lobby on it's resurrection then an approach to Kristin Scott Thomas to go see Mr K would be a cool idea

Keith I forget whether you have v1 or v2 of that Nokton, but the optional LH-whatever hood for v1 makes it sit perfectly level on the R-D1.

Someone mentioned plastic. The only plastic on mine is the little battery flap. Not much paint left on my camera. It is magnesium alloy that shines up nice ... the lcd housing, every switch and button (except I think for the exposure lock button), as well as the brass hotshoe. The inner post of the rewind knob is brass also.

Does anyone remember when it was released...$2999. Nobody could wrap their heads around such an expensive camera here being talked about (these were the days of $30 J3's). It changed the landscape here, lots of dollars all of the sudden being thrown around. I don't think I ever wanted anything so desperately. I partially blame the Josh Root pictorial (that Tom A. was a part of) posted on photo.net. Loved those colors! Then a year or so later, Epson sold r-d1 refurbs, for like $1500. That's when I snagged mine. It was like a feeding frenzy. That was such a deal at the time.

For as much of a financial flop the camera was for Epson, I gotta believe there is one sitting on a shelf there somewhere, as a testament to what you can get done if you have a passion for something, and manage to get your elegant pet project green lighted, in a world of beige boxes.

You will not regret to own this camera. 5 months ago,I sold my Leica M9 and keep shooting films. Few months later I got a Rd-1s finally to fit my digital use. Personally,I will not go back to M9 again...

Kevin, yes I remember. After you did this, my GAS for the M9 subsided. I'm happy with my R-D1 and my lenses.

I'm now concentrating on post processing to extract every drop of goodness from that 6mp....far more productive and interesting than GAS! 🙂

Mine's had my black 35mm f1.2 Nokton on it since I got it ... and that looks sexy!

That's the lens that was constantly mounted on my R-D1s... Except for a couple of the B&W photos, all of the images in THIS GALLERY were taken with that combo.

great idea keith. And the 35 1.2 is great on it. so is a zeiss 25mm for a 36mm fov

Ezzie's custom wooden grip that i got with it. Best grip ever 🙂 (my dial is slightly off though after bumping the camera hard one day :/ )

No matter how beautiful, cool, or nice a camera is, there's someone out there who's tired ... uh, winding its shutter.

As for Top Gear, that's a show that can only be done properly by the British, trying to imitate it will only yield the same result as a foreigner trying to bow like people in Japan or Korea or China.
