OK one for the Collectors.

Recently I won on eBay an important camera that alas had been split up into two auctions so I had to make sure I won both. The camera in question was an IVF #60822 with a 50mm f/1.8 SERENAR lens attached …or was. What got me interested in the auction initially was the lens serial #58015. Most guys who have my book can check this out (pgs 90 &94) but the earliest recorded lens in the focal length is #58129 (no camera) which is in my collection. Lens #58105 is the 15th lens in the production run. At first, I was disappointed that the camera was not there but on checking the sellers auctions realized he was selling a camera in separate auction. When I checked with him if the lens belonged to the camera body, he confirmed it did. Now most early f/1.8 lenses are engraved on the outside filter rim edge with “Japan” and the early IVF should have the reasonable rare “Made in Japan” (MIJ) marking on the baseplate (pg 28). On receiving both items, the camera indeed did have the MIJ marking but the lens lacked the “Japan” marking on the rim edge. This threw me out as ALL T1 SERENAR 50mm f/1.8 lenses I have recorded have this “Japan” mark. The reason this external “Japan” mark is explained in my book but this lens is one of those lenses that were sold BEFORE Canon decided to include the country of origin “Japan” in the front ID ring of the lens. The only diffrence I can see between this lens #58015 and #58129 is the filter rim is shiny chrome whereas the later lens has a matt chrome appearance.

This is an interesting combination as rather proves that the 50mm f/1.8 lens when issued in November 1951 was issued with this body. During my research into the lenses I also kept a record of the cameras that the lenses were attached to so I have a large database to work on for my Camera book which I have decided to do instead of the Accessory book.

Interesting, thanks Peter!

BTW, though I am glad you're doing the camera book, if you decide never to do an accessory book, consider hosting that information online somewhere.
