New York January NYC Meet-Up

Cal,
After I fell from my bike I got a Polaroid cube, which is a cheap alternative to a go pro, in order to record my own death in traffic. The accessories that came with it were crap, so I was struggling to find a good way to mount it. I ended up attaching it with double sided tape to the top of my IIIc that I was shooting with from the bike. I now have lots of unedited shaky video of my drive by camera antics in queens. One day I'll make a compilation.

That 127mm Ektar sounds similar to other lenses made for Polaroid. It seems to have been their favorite design, I believe it is a Tessar. There is a Tominon version, and I have two Rodenstocks that I think I paid $25 for. One is clean, while the other has fungus etched into the coating. I mounted the good one on a Technika board. It looks like it has pretty large coverage, easily covering 5x7. Polaroid used them as closeup as well as general shooting lenses.

Snarky Joe,

If you make it to the January Meet-Up I'll have with me this book by a famous/legendary bicycle wheel builder to gift you.

I bought this book for myself so this is a "regifting."

Every few cubic inch counts when you live in a 650 square foot one bedroom apartment in Madhattan.

Cal

I'm planning on being there...

Christian,

The 127mm is on a Polaroid MP-4 shutter that lacks an aperture.

The other Ektar is a 152/4.5. Would be really great to set up one of these lenses up on my 4x5 Linhof (your old 1952 Tech 4/5).

The new Hero 7 has a remarkable IS built in. Also it seems to be set up just like a cop's Body-Cam. One button starts recording. The chest plate is kinda evil looking in a military manner.

I imagine I can play this up by wearing my Patagonia knickers for a military style. Could be a pretty badass look on a odd looking skinny guy. LOL.

There is this time lapse feature that has some appeal. Imagine a lap in Central Park where its really like bowling for tourists to show how clueless people are. On a bike the helmet mount works best. For walking the chestplate I favor, but the helmet mount would be cool for being bold and drawing attention.

I understand that in the northern end of Central Park where I do my interval training on the Harlem Hills that cops issue tickets to speeding cyclists on the downhill side. I'm hoping that the GoPro will deter any police interaction and will protect me from hassle.

I will likely have to learn Premier Pro for editing. Also what is interesting is this GoPro 360 view camera, but the reveiws suggest that the editing software is a headache. Pretty much the FOV is composed and edited later so one camera can be like having multiple cameras.

The 360 cam would be great as a bike mount cam.

I want to time the lights again on Third Avenue, which has no bike lane, where basically I am doing the speed of traffic in traffic. I would call this "Urban Single Track." LOL.

I have to love a 17 1/2 pound titanium bike that is built for sprinting, climbing, and rapid acceleration specifically set up as an urban single speed for a skinny bitch like me.

Note that at the end of the article there is mention of one of my Baby Linhof's, but in fact it is one of Christian's "Home-Brews" that is basically a hand built prototype one-off.

My apologies to Christian.

Shots all taken with a Leica SL with massive, oversized, heavy 50 Lux-SL AF lens. Images pretty much other than possible croping are unprocessed. This supports my reputation for being a lazy slacker.

Today I had the good pleasure of seeing that Brancoprata, a couple of Wedding and Editorial photogs from Portugal, posted about Accidental Icon and Cal. noting the credits! as inspiration

It's one of those "world is small" things as I've met all of you, well except Lyn. Brancoprata do mostly film work and I had some coffee with them and other photogs during a Photo talk/convention in Barcelona.

Not a pro, but found myself amongst some important wedding photogs from Europe. I just went in for one of the openly held talks...

Anyways it's good to see your work out there

That light Ti bike (had to translate to longish 8kg) must be to behold. I am currently amused by the new tendency for Gravel bikes, basically something like hardtail MTBs from 1990 with drop bars. What comes around goes around.

As the only thing I can play are recorded media I have no interest for Guitar amps but did look for HiFi kits back in my days... Wish I'd put one together sometime.

What a great picture! and talking about HiFi kits I picked up a pair of Fisher tube amps from the early 60's, a X200 and a X202C. Massive iron in both with 7591 power tubes, Ah the sound of tubes!

Bob,

The only thing with 7591's is that today they are obsolete and only NOS is available. I have one NOS matched pair. For a while I was into small Ampegs that used 7591's.

Another reference is "Antique Electronic Supply."

Also for Hi-Fi I built a "Doc Bottlehead" Single Ended Triode pair of monoblocks that use a single 300B for 8 watts of tube. When I worked at Grumman I made two chassis's knowing one day I would build a Hi-Fi.

Pretty much was assembling a kit. "Maggie" asked me, "Why do the speakers have to be so big." LOL. My speakers are called "Staight Eights" and are eight 4 inch speakers with a tweeter. Really only a two-way system.

For value visit www.bottlehead.com.

At one time I wanted to go with a 2A3 triode for a wopping 3 watts of power, but then I would have gone to Lowther folded horns which are very efficient but use massive enclosures.

What! can't hear you!

Bob,

One of the reasons why my hearing is damaged was my dad yelling and screaming at me in Chinese.

Kinda funny how parents love the most the kid that they should really hate. I was a very aweful, disturbed and angry kid.

Boy did he hate my long hair. Back in the day the Chinese gang members were called collectively "the long hairs," and my father could pronounce in perfect English, "Cut your hair" without any accent.

Back in the day, when I was building out lofts in SoHo, I went to Chinatown to get something to eat. Even in the late 70's Soho was mostly an abandoned place. There were a few galleries on West Broadway, and the only places to get food were the Gourmet Garage (original store) on Spring Street, and a place simply called "Food."

So I would go to Chinatown which was considered a rather dangerous place because of the gangs. Kung-Fu was used and in a blink of an eye violence happened. It was later in the eighties when the Ghost Shadows and the Flying Dragons styled themselves in three piece suits and used 38's.

So I walk into a crowded restaurant and get on a line, but the owner comes up to me and asks me, "What do you want?" and when I say a quart of roast pork fried rice he runs in the back and fills my order pronto. When I pulled out $5.00 to pay him, it confused him, as if he didn't really want my money. It was then I realized that I was mistaken as a gang member.

What made Chinatown even more violent in the 70's was the end of the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese that migrated knew war, and the violence they knew was imported at that time.

So I hope a riot does not break out if Chris comes by with a box full of gear to donate to use vulture like photographers. LOL.

They say, "Watch out for the quiet ones." LOL.

Jorde,

While Maggie is the "Accidental Icon," I'm the "Incidental Photographer."

Pretty much "I'm just trying to mind my own business..."

On Thursdays I get banished to the Community Room in my building, where I grab an electric guitar and practice unplugged for a few hours while "Maggie" does a zoom call teaching an online course.

I now strongly suspect that Maggie will have a TV commercial from that tech company air during the Superbowl. The timing is right. How cool would that be?

Kinda funny is that her followers think she is tall and are surprise to learn that she is only 5' 2".

You could get new Russian 7591 tubes now they are pretty good.

What a difference running tandem humidifiers makes. I'm running 60% as my desired setting and pretty much there are less fluxuations. This should make my guitars and printer happy. I can feel the difference breathing, and I sleep better.

Know that I'm a horrible snorer and that I got bad cases of dry mouth before I resolved the deficient humidity level situation.

In today's episode of the "Incidental Photographer" somehow it seems I might have picked up an agent. The tech company that is a household name asked to use one of my photographs and now "Maggie's" agent is in the loop negociating on my behalf.

I like Max. He is hyper aggressive and pretty much a greedy ******* when it comes to milking clients for high fees. He is a tough guy as far as anything involving money.

Kinda divine intervention because over the holidays I have been reckless in buying bike parts, humidifiers, a vacuum, and other household items to build out my studio.

Pretty likely my tax return will be delayed by the government shutdown, so I can't count on that money. Here on the street, my local grocery in Spanish Harlem, Maggie reports was a mob scene yesterday. Also on the news was reported that the "Snap" program was doubled up to a two month allotment to account for the government shutdown.

I know that hungry kids and angry parents is what caused "Arab Spring." I hope that kind of suffering and violence does not happen here. Evidently the poor where I live are already hoarding and hunkering down.

Be careful out there.

I don have any more I can bring on Sunday. I decided the Wontoncraft leather M holster was too expensive to give away...I have my limits. I do have another Repro thing its a lamp housing and condenser that fits on a reprovit stage instead of the eyepiece
