Jeff Ascough under NDA for new Rangefinder

This is getting to be as interesting as the build-up to 09/09/09.

I like this: "...I can tell you that it is a game changer."

It will probably be sooner, it sound like it is being marketed to wedding photographers, and the season is about to start in May.

Canon was rumored to be working on a high end successor to the 5D, it's AF is weak, compared to the D700 some say. However, increasingly wedding photographers are being asked to included an HD video montage, I have a friend who shoots with a D3 and that's her number one request these days, she was asking me about using my GH1 this season. Anyways, it's odd to think that a FF rangefinder would be something that Canon would consider, but who knows. I bet we won't have to wait until Photokina, it sound like it will be out sooner than that.

I think it HAS to be a Canon, too, since Jeff drank the koolaid.

But would any company miss PMA?

Maybe 'Net rumors' are better at selling cameras/generating excitememt than any stinkin' PMA, these days?

1) digital sensors are completely flat, while film has a little thickness to it. it's harder to focus accurately when you have less wiggle room.

So is that why Olmpus tells me I cannot put film camera lenses on my digital E-P1 because sensors are flat??? Since depth of focus defines "wiggle room" and senors are "flat" then it is easier to focus on a sensor?

2) digital has more acutance than film, though the detail cuts off at a certain point. anyhow, the higher acutance makes small focusing errors more obvious.

What do you mean by "acutance"?

leica type rangefinders can't compensate for focus shift, a particular problem of fast lenses (low light photography being the rangefinder camera's traditional strong point), so leica's most recent lenses minimize focus shift by incorporating floating elements. focusing with some older lenses will still be problematic, as well as long, fast lenses. the 1.4x magnifier is mandatory in the latter case. there's also the slight hassle of adjusting your lenses and bodies to get the most out of them.

What style of camera can compensate for focus shift?

Wow, how exciting! I wonder if they're LED framelines...

If it really is full frame, that IS quite a game changer. I'm delighted the manufacturers are tuned in to this market lately...

I agree that April fools would be lame.

Is it only me or wouldn't it be great to have a thoroughly modern camera along the lines of a traditional RF? Leicas are for purists with deep pockets. That's fine, but I read some really nice ideas in this thread.

If the supposed game changer was to have AF WITH M-lens compatibility (possibly via an adapter) would that be a Bad Thing? Or if it would have HD video? A combination of a traditional optical RF and EVIL technology? Not to me.

Let's not forget RFF is a very vocal minority, with a very specific focus (pun intended). Translation: Is there really a market for what we want? A market someone can make money with?

Anyway what I want is a simple full frame mirrorless camera with traditional controls (think Nikon FM2), with a Nikon D3s sensor. As small as possible, with a combination of an optical rangefinder and EVIL tech (superimposed and switchable). It should be able to take all M and F glass, with AF if the lens supports it.

And it will never happen. If I was Bill Gates I'd give Nikon or Leica the budget and have them design and build it for me.

I guess nobody actually managed to store the pics somewhere before he had to pull them?

Have there actually been any pictures? Doesn't the bit about "pull the images as the traffic caused my server to crash" give away that this is a prank? His blog is hosted by TypePad, isn't it? They'll be able to deal with a few gearheads following a rangefinder rumor. Plus, it's on the same server as his normal blog which uses photos all over the place.

Yes, sounds like a fake.. moreover why should have him opened a new blog and then realize that it has no bandwith enough for images.. and c'mon only 47/48 followers can't generate that much traffic.

I was wondering that too.

But I'm also giving him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it's because I have high standards for April Fool's jokes. Posting teasers about made up products that people would be eager to buy doesn't strike me as a very clever or funny April Fool's prank. Especially if you start it several days before. Just sounds like jerking people around for no real reason if you ask me.

My thoughts exactly. Prior to seeing that blog post, I had hopes of a new drf. Seeing that just shattered them completely.

Maybe someone hacked into his blog account and decided to play a trick on all of us :bang:

Still ... if it's true it HAS to be a Fuji. Or a Nikon !!
