Jeff Ascough under NDA for new Rangefinder

Cabin pressure restored...

Cabin pressure restored...

:bang: Punked, indeed. Damn. 😎

I understand Ascough's reasoning, but it was a rotten idea to lie outright about a new camera, beginning in late March. Doing so _on_ April Fools Day would be totally defensible. Perhaps ol' Jeff isn't familiar with how the April Fool's sequence is supposed to work.

I still believe, based on plenty of folks who aren't Jeff Ascough, that there is an EVIL (electronic viewfinder, interchangeable lens) camera in development by Canon/Nikon which will offer Leica-M compatibility and a "way forward" for rangefinder fans. I think the commentaries by Michael Reichmann (and guests) at Luminous Landscape on what Leica should do next to innovate with their M digitals are reflective of what the bigger companies will just go out and _do_.

Again, here's hoping... I'm saving my "lists" and will not be surprised if they line up nicely with a shipping product, given some more time still...

Cheers,

A local museum had announced that they woul be painting over a John Lennon Cadillac(?) and there was a outcry. This was years ago. Turned out that it was an April Fool's day joke done a few weeks early. The museum apologized for it's bad judgement.

Can't be bothered to read the whole silly thread, so I'm sure this has been said, but I don't understand why folks are so in a tizzy? His little joke had a greater effect because it lasted a few days–revealed on 4/1 should be okay, as it's not like he drew it out for several months, just a few days.

Anyway, if someone with a little pull, a bit of name recognition can do something like this and get a little movement into the DRF world, then better! So what if a bunch of people play the stooge along the way?

Here's a poll: which would you rather have: a bit of embarrassment at having believed an april fool, only to have a more accessible DRF in the future, or just to have believed some other april fool and not have any DRF result?

Suck it up kids, and let's hope for the best!!!

What has this got to do with nationality? Nice one.

Just that I expect better from the Brits, that's all. You have the reputation for quit wit and biting humor, none of which was in evidence in this effort. Perhaps someone from the Ministry of Humour should show up at his door and box his ears. I mean, there are standards are there not? 😀

Deeeep breath. Deeep breath. OK, now: what's the fuss? I completely get that this community cares more than average about the sort of fake product in the joke. Is it at all possible that there is more anger when one is punked on an issue about which one cares deeply? It takes two, and I have tangoed. Now, time to take some picture in the lovely April air.

It wasn't a joke. It was a lie which made many people commit to discussions and waste their precious time thinking about something that doesn't exist. Despicable behaviour.

I decided it was a spoof when he started talking about an "HCB/Tri-X" mode.

That said, if someone brings out a "full-frame" EVIL camera that can use M-mount lenses, how many would avoid it because it doesn't contain actual rangefinder optics?

Didn't I read over at 4/3 Rumors that sepiareverb is testing the same camera?

A quick search of my name at said site reveals nothing. I believe that it was this guy who started this rumor of a rumor.

Sepiareverb/Robert, the question here, since you have one of whatever this is already in your hot little hands is: what do you recommend to those of us in the great unwashed masses?

I was only doing some "market" research.😉

I did manage to get Colinh back!

lol. I wish I was creative enough to have thought this up.

though I probably cared less about the non-existent camera (having no money for one if it existed) then some of you other folks, I have to admit that I was just as punked as the rest of you.

if you can't laugh at yourself, you shouldn't laugh at anyone else. I'm laughing now.

I understand that in a certain war in the 1960's and 70's, when pilots accidentally bombed the wrong hamlet, the stock phrase was "f**k 'em if they can't take a joke." I think that was an awful sentiment in that circumstance but a rather fitting one here.

No one's village got napalmed. So, relax, take some pictures, have a beer or a cup of coffee, stop taking yourself so seriously and have a laugh at your own expense. we all need thicker skin. the joke may have been lame or the timing a little off, but it was a joke and it really came at no one's expense so far as I can tell. right? no one actually suffered any harm, did they?

if it's true that this april fool's "has pricked the conscience of two big players in the camera market that I know of," we owe jeff a big thank you! this could really lead to something, and jeff staked his rep in the online community to do so. it's not like he didn't leave enough clues, anyway.

I have been thinking the same thing for a few pages now.

I do not have any emotional attachment this situation, but as someone with a great sense of humor. This was a LAME joke.

The equivalent to third graders that still resort to potty word jokes.

Creativity lost in April 1 jokes

Creativity lost in April 1 jokes

Let's hope the inevitable next digital rangefinder shows more creativity than today's April 1 jokes.
