I went on an underground gold mine tour that was quite informative.
But the highlight was a tour of Soweto with a history perspective. Very modern, real, gut wrenching history that resonates.

I would stay in the Maboneng Precinct: http://www.mabonengprecinct.com It would provide you with a good based from which to explore the inner city.
Take a tour of the Constitutional Court and its art collection - a unique building and complex housed in the old Fort Prison http://www.constitutionalcourt.org.za/site/thecourt/thebuilding.htm#visits

I'm heading to Madagascar for 10 days with my father, we have decided to spend a few days in Johannesburg to adjust to the time change before diving in.
Was thinking I'd bring M9 bodies and the 28/35/50 summicrons, but will decide as it gets closer thanks to the ever-changing rules. I sure don't want to deal with the volume of film I'd bring, but would rather have a camera in my hand than not...
My father had the Soweto tour in mind, glad to hear the positive review.

I agree about staying in Maboneng.
A day ticket on the red tourist bus was R170 when I was last there and you can cover a lot of ground and see heaps.
https://www.apartheidmuseum.org (understand that it is owned by the Gold Reef City Casino group).
Soweto has changed a hugely since 1991. Tours typically don't put a lot of money into local hands, but it's worth seeing.
Top of the Carlton Centre has an amazing view. Was R15 last time I was there.

Constitution Hill is lovely to walk around, and there are several walking tours of downtown Joburg.
Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens has a lot of amazing African plants and a surprising number of bird species and other wildlife. The Montecasino Bird Gardens are amazing.
There are surprising numbers of parks nearby that you can walk in.
The reputed violence and danger are real, so take normal security precautions. Remember that 1 in 5 people you walk by have HIV.
It's an amazing city in a beautiful country. Enjoy.
