is it rangefinder coupled? could be troublesome if not.

where's a good place to buy?

yes, it's coupled, but it could be a problem if it's off a bit - especially at f/2. i picked mine up from ebay and i've been happy. it's a typical ebay fsu special - element has a tiny scratch and it needed some tlc with the lemon oil cloth. the aperture blades and focus mechanism move very well.

i originally bought it for my bessa-L and had good success scale focussing it (with a turret finder for framing) even wide open. on my r2 it was less than impressive - focus is off. it's suprisingly not too bad on my r-d1 focussed (using the 135 on the turret for framing) so maybe it was just my eyes and r2's patch.

I got a nice one from Yuri. I think his buisness name is Fedka. I met him in a laundromat in Brooklyn and purchased a Jupiter-8 ($40) and the Jupiter-9 ($85 I think.) It was a fun transaction cause it had a slightly illicit feel to it <g>.

Most of his sales are thru mail order I imagine.

They are both good lenses. The '9' works with the patch to help find focus. (Is that what rangefinder coupled means?)

If you look through older posts, especially in the Russian RF (FSU RF) section you'll find many posts related to J-9

overall I'd say it's a fine lens, but some need to be adjusted for use with Leica standardized bodies (because the Russians used slightly different standard focal length).

A good one is a great lens. I would expect to pay $100 to $120 for a decent one. Mine is one of my favorite lenses, and has always focused properly on my Bessa R. Some may need to be adjusted, though. I would highly recommend buying from Yuri at fedka.com. Every lens I've gotten from him has been exactly as described and without issues. He also offers a 10 day warranty and can service what he sells.

I agree. I went through several before I found a good one, but my good one (a fairly late black one) is very nice. And mine focuses quite nicely on my Bessa-R too.

My new Jupiter-9 is being overhauled by Fedka right now. Should be ready to ship in a few days. Can't wait🙂

Cost me about a hundred bucks total, including Fedka's internal cleaning, regreasing, and collimation to Leica specs.

Sa-weet lens!! It's a killer.
