That was cool. For the first time today, I asked a stranger if i could photograph her. An actual photo shoot so it's not done yet but she agreed!!
I was really nervous! Got to do it more so it gets easier.

For those of you interested in this form of portraiture, there is a photo group on flickr called "100 Strangers". It's basically to practice the "just ask", plus anything else you might learn from asking and shooting. I have found that most people are up for a photo. A great percentage say "yes" (more than 75% in my experience).

I was encouraged with his style. I have always felt kind of sneaky and aggressive at the same time trying to get those shots of strangers on the street. So simple, just ask. He made processing and printing look easy and engaging. Thanks for shairing.

Just asking is great, I do it every time it is possible also to take pictures of properties of people (e.g. a classic car or a pet of someone) and usually people not only agree but they are kind of honored that someone noticed them. Even people one would usually think to be more problematic such as beggars, graffiti artists, skaters or bikers are usually more receptive than one would think once one is clear about what is the planned use of the pictures. Even after a no usually people are not as annoyed as when one tries to picture them without permission. It seems to me that it is easier to ask if one shows some pictures and "waist" some time explaining exactly what is the project one is working on.

Agreed. I'd appreciate it if he wouldn't throw his garbage on the ground, though. Littering is not OK, even if it is in the hometown of the New England Patriots (an American-style football team, if you're reading this from outside the US).
