Just playing with my new scanner

Awesome! I got a Minotla Dual Scan IV. I'm sure I'll still come up with some excuse for not posting photos haha

Andrew,

I really like my 9950F. If you find the Canoscan software unsatisfactory, Sivferfast AI 6 works well with that scanner.

Congratulations,

Congrats on the scanner purchase! Same one as I have and I'm quite happy with mine.

Willie, I'm curious about the silverfast AI 6 software. What do you find that it does better than the Canoscan sw? 99% of what I do with the scanner is through PSCS2 anyway but I'm just curious as to your thoughts.

I have both a 9950 F and a Dualscan IV. Lately I haven't used either because I have taken lousy photos not worth scanning. I have been very satisfied with both, however. Perhaps my photos will improve in the New Year. I hope you enjoy yours.

smileguy,

In my tests Silverfast gives more detailed scans. also, SF also has a "raw" (HDR tiff actually) scan mode that produces scans that are unmolested (or least molested) by hidden software modifications. For color negatives HDR mode works really well compared to the auto-tone mode of CanoScan or the SF Negafix mode. I use levels and curves to adjust the HDR scan to my liking. CanoScan does a great job with faded 35mm slides and print scans. Siverfast AI has convenient batch mode features that let you scan a whole roll automatically. CanoScan has a wonderful automatic frame selection mode that saves a lot of manual set up time.

The 9950F is a great scanner and it can produce results that are similar to dedicated film scanners (look here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/willie_901/sets/1551353/).
