Isn't the real reason there is so much heat behind these choices is because of the inability to engage a public discussion within the bounds of reason about things like: 1) the growing body of evidence that shows that a linear system based on high consumption leads to disaster; 2) the increasing polarization of rich and poor? Not to mention the reams of studies showing that consumer behavior is often motivated by experiences of real or perceived victimization, fear, and powerlessness, big and small, that occur everyday- in modern society.
Because of this inability, personal choice often gets moralized way out of proportion to its importance.
