Killing Bill

Yes I had quite an heated exchange of opinions with him a while ago, and it was a lot of fun, now I am reduced in lashing out at Aussie football fans, (see the world cup forum) but it is not the same!

Pleas Bill come back, I promise you can shout at me any way you want!

I'm glad Bill left. He seemed to relish being rude and obnoxious in the last months he was here.

He constantly hijacked threads.

He insulted me in a careless reply to one of my posts.
I asked him to apologize in a PM in order to avoid confrontation in public and he refused because he wanted me to correct him in public.

Towards the end of his time here, I felt his disruptive activities out-weighed his positive contributions.

I am not bothered that I am likely in the minority regarding B.M.'s departure.

sorry to hear that

sorry to hear that

i never interacted with Bill other than asking and answering questions.

In any case, you can put users in your ignore list if this sort of thing should happen again.

He could indeed come across as abrasive and/or rude. He certainly didn't seem to mind his opinions being controversial. But, he was always ready/anxious to defend his positions, and normally in a thought provoking, if not always gentle way.

All that said, I almost always enjoyed his comments. They were in fact usually thought provoking whether you agreed or not. If he didn't always try to keep his comments and demeanor from being somewhat gruff, I personally could live with it for the humor and mental stimulation I got. He didn't always sugar coat his arguments but he always made people, or at least me, think. If you could get beyond the method of transmission, there was food for thought. I think he sort of enjoyed the thought of being perceived as a curmudgeon. Maybe he really was one. I have put up with worse, so I didn't mind him. In fact, as I said, I enjoyed most of his threads/comments.

But I can only speak for myself. Obviously, some others didn't feel that way.

I've had all of 2 run-ins with Bill. Both were heated, and both were based on opposing points of view. I've had many more exchanges with Bill that were both positive, and supportive.

I watched as another member made it a point to bait Bill. Bill wasn't the only person to be subjected to this treatment.

Frankly he is/was no where near as obnoxious or obsequious as others. Also, his opinions were usually well informed.

He had a distinct dislike for snobbery and elitism and wasn't afraid to make it known. At times his posts were over the top. But, he was also self correcting. More so than one or two others who remain.

I miss having Bill around, too. RFF seems a bit dull without him.

You can occasionally catch Bill and Brian Sweeny over at nelsonphoto.

In many ways I miss Bill too. As has been noted by others, I enjoyed many of his ideas and his knowledge. I liked the way he could make you rethink pre-conceived ideas. However, I do not miss his flames, trolls and profanity and the trouble that these caused. Nor did I like his manipulation and the way he tried to portray himself as the innocent party when he tended to be in the thick of the trouble. As Ruben points out, he is still a member and was not banned. He was asked to refrain from this behaviour by Jorge in response to many complaints. Several days later, he made his farewell post saying he could not be himself without that behaviour and was, therefore, leaving. As noted elsewhere, he seems to manage to get his ideas across without it on APUG. 😉

So, yes I do miss his ideas and he is welcome back if he wishes to behave like he does on APUG. However, I also miss people like Brian Sweeney and many others who have left in the last 6 months because they were fed up with the flames and the trollish threads, most of which Bill was present in. The loss of their combined input was greater IMHO 🙁

Really.. this place seems to be one of TWO civil communities online - and as such everyone should just learn to live and let live; and that should apply both to the "stars" and the "groupies". 😀

wow its amazing how much of a response another post about Bill gets.

Because of when I signed up, I've missed a whole load of all of this - all I know is Bill made some great posts, and now they're gone becasuse people can't just take it easy.

I also enjoyed the copake_ham threads about whether to put protective filters on your lenses or not. No other issue invites more controversy. Copake's attitude was, if you didnt use them you were 1) a moron 2) terminally disrespectful to your glass.
He was a lot of fun.
