Killing Bill

I'm glad Bill left. He seemed to relish being rude and obnoxious in the last months he was here.

He constantly hijacked threads.

He insulted me in a careless reply to one of my posts.
I asked him to apologize in a PM in order to avoid confrontation in public and he refused because he wanted me to correct him in public.

Towards the end of his time here, I felt his disruptive activities out-weighed his positive contributions.

I am not bothered that I am likely in the minority regarding B.M.'s departure.

Willie,

I do agree with you.

I've spent a bit of time trying to figure out how to respond in fairness about Bill, or even if I should. None of us are perfect. We all have feelings and can lose our temper. I did so once in response to Bill, calling him on what he wrote about me in public. I believe that kindness is the most important virtue. It is greater than all the other human virtues. When I was younger, it was important for me to prove how smart I was. Now the most important thing is how to be as kind as possible.

Bill on two occasions wrote horrible insults directed personally at me. I've ignored him since. I did not contact any moderator, but I should have. That is not taking offence at his opinion but rather at actions, his behavior.

Don't put Bill or anyone on a pedestal. He may be bright and a good writer, but those things are easily replaced, human feelings not so. We are a human community; we have not and should not fall into a “pissing contest” to see who is the best, fastest, or most knowledgeable writer. There is NOTHING that has been posted on this forum, that I have not known or seen elsewhere in a book or magazine. Those tidbits about filters, formulas, and facts may now take an extra day or two to surface from one of the older and more experienced forum members. Such increased participation by other members may increase the community feel and value. I don’t want to be in a forum where I have the feeling that I may be ambushed by someone after a post. A community should be comfortable, not fearful. There are always kind and polite ways to express a thought or opinion.

The question we need to ask ourselves is if we want this forum to be a comfortable community, where one can learn or express oneself OR a training ground where we can sharpen our words, show how smart we are, and learn somethings photographic. This being an internet forum, we will always be faced with that question.

Brian Sweeny is IMO the greater loss for the RFF company of friends. His knowledge, enthusiasm and respect for the newbee is what welcomed many of us here.

I enjoyed the posts of the other notable RFF members that have now left. But I understand why some may have been ticked off by their posts. Bill Mattock in particular was valuable much for the reasons already mentioned. But I felt that as of late his loathing for his own photography extended somewhat to (the photography) of some of the other members here. Strictly speaking RFF is not a support group for niche photographers but it often operates like one. BM hated that; others didn't.

Since I am new to the forum, I have felt that I should let this sleeping dog lie, but alas here I am. I tender these comments as a someone on the outside looking in and trying to decide if I want to donate my money to the forum, or just lurk. so here it is. 1. I really love the work by the people on this forum, it is quite inspiring and makes me want to shoot more pictures. I have submitted my first photos for critique and have only had one response so far. Good comments, but I know there are more out there. 2. At the same time I have seen about a hundred comments about deleted threads and Bill push my thread to the bottom of the list on the RFF homepage. So, I am here for inspiration and critiques, but instead I get the readers digest edition of a high school yearbook on signing day. I think we all need to respect each other, but at the same time the moderators should not have to be the United nations of forum decor. People need to have a little thicker skin and realize this is just the I quess every time I am about to take that step forward and upgrade my membership, I take two steps back and wonder if it is worth it.

Kim, I won't put Bill on a pedestal. I agree that he had the knack of being the bull in the proverbial china shop and in fact enjoyed being the center of attention. I've had a couple of disagreements with him myself .

For many, and this may pertain to Bill, RF photography only holds their interest for a limited time and then they move onto a different phase. In short, Bill's best RF days may be behind him.

One last observation, those roguish, independent thinkers may be a moderators PIA, but they do make life interesting.

Andy,

I have to say that i miss your exchanges with Bill. Knowledge, strong opinions and a flair for the english language can often be extremely amusing as well as informative. It would be a dull place if we all agreed all of the time.

OMG - I recall Bill had 300+ RF cameras. What do you do with those when you lose interest.........

In my 'umble opinion we should leave this topic behind us.It is taking up,and wasting, too much space and energy, for no purpose.

Brian.

Perhaps the most interesting thing for me flowing from this thread so far, is how different human behaviour can be seen from different viewpoints and different personal experiences. After all this is not so surprising and nevertheless it is.

This calls for extreme caution and I say it publicly as another way to knock it into my flat head.

Extremely instructive and humanly touching thread for me, I have to say.

Bill's signature on his new forum:
I departed Washington Park, looking back only once; but they did not follow me.

Does anybody know what "Washington Park" might be?

Wow,

46 posts about Bill. Yes he was wise, a sage some might say. If I upgrade to a premium membership will I get even more of this. I think I might go to his website a beg him to come back so everyone can get back to photography or something.

The most famous "Washington Park" was the home of the Dodgers just before they moved to Ebbets Field. That would be late 19th and early 20th century.

I realize my Dodgers just lost three to your Twins, but I just have to think about '65!

p.s. When I was in Denver last year, I drove by a Washington Park there. There has to be 50 Washington Parks in this country. (1 per state by PO regulation)
