Yes, Steve, choices . . . the bane of modern life!
When my daughter was little we used to go into Toys R Us with a very definite purchase in mind — say, a specific iteration of My Little Pony. But when she was confronted with this warehouse crammed full of toys, her attention being pulled here and there, she ultimately broke into tears and never knew what she "really" wanted. I think this is the state of affairs you describe with photographers, eager to make the right choice but knowing we will fail.
Without progress, we could all make our natural pigments and scratch marks on our cave walls. Although, a good cave nowadays is hard to find!
