I have just been in a similar situation and I've used a Kiev 5...that was really quiet!
Except that a retina is a good choice! A Retina IIIs even has a variety of lenses.

Don't forget to mention the Yashica Electros! Maybe even better than the Hexar AF becauseof the 45mm lens...

My quietest camera is my Rollei TLR. Lens is kind of slow, though. They do make a F2.8 though. Mine are F3.5. Between the big neg and the VERY detailed image of the Xenotar, it might do the trick. Whisper quiet.

Fast enough and very, very quiet if you want it to.

Yeah, but can you re-cover it?

A Bronica or Mamiya RF with a longish lens? These have leave shutters as well.

I second a Rolleiflex TLR - back when I had my 2.8C and 3.5 - those were the quietest cameras ever. But at times a bit uncomfortable to use - I could never figure a comfortable way to hold one.
As far as Leica Ms - they are quiet too. I wonder if a leather case would muffle some sound too. I don't use cases, so can't tell.

I agree on the leaf shutter suggestions; if your M4-P is too loud, no focal plane shutter camera will do! You might consider the Bronica RF645 wherein the only extraneous noise is a faint bzzz as the electronic leaf shutter is recocked after a shot.

You want an M with a meter, and quiet? I think you need an M5 to pair with your M4-P! What lens were you using on the R3A? An M5 with a 90 Summicron is a very quiet camera.

The Hexar AF is a very good choose, because have a silent shot mode. The next time, in the concert music hall i will use my Canonet GIII QL 17. I vote also for Yashica Electro 35 models and Retinas models.
Ciao.

My Hexar AF (black) have turned my M's into loud beast.
It's incredibely quiet. Limited to 35mm though (but what 35...)

I second the Hexar AF. Quiet in normal mode, silent in 'whisper mode' and the fixed lens is by far the best 35mm I've ever used.
And I consider the AF very effective and metering spot-on.
A Retina RF will do too, but lacks autofocus and (auto-)metering.

The question is: do you need more than one lens?
If no: Yashica Electro GSN
if yes: Leica M or Hexar RF
would be my choice.
I have an M7 and the H-RF. The shutter of the H-RF may be quiet, but the film advance is of a long duration and is rather loud. For quiet, I'd go with the M.

hello to all...
wow... love all the posts!!!

ok, i just bit the bait, and am in the midst of negotiating for an M6. .72. (hehe)
The M6 will be paired to the 90 Elmar for most of my work, (the hector if need be).
But thanks to you guys, i'm starting to get GAS for a hexar. :bang:
