Kodak Ektar 100

My first roll - sorry SLR (EOS 630, Olympus OM 21mm F3.5).
That's okay, I'll live. ;)

Looks quite good. Haven't gotten into doing truly interesting stuff with the roll in one of my Hexars, but hoping to do so tomorrow.

I just received a roll marked "sample" from Kodak customer service today. I'm going up to the N. Georgia mountains next week looking for some fall color in clear low humidity weather. I'll be shooting with my Contax G2 with lenses from 28-90mm. After the Ektar runs out I'll switch to Reala 100 exposed at ISO 64. I'll shoot the Ektar at box speed and see how it does. If I get some nice stuff I'll attempt to post my first images. I'm planning to be pleased with the results and will order 10 rolls or so from Freestyle upon my return.

One more...

Steve, how long are going to be there, I won't get in until late Sunday? But if you are going to be around for a while it would be fun to do something, even if it is just Breakfast. I'll have my car, and too much photo gear.

John

I'll be getting in around noon on Sunday. Afternoon in Newport Beach I think. I'm staying in Cypress through the week for training at a software vendor's site.
What are your plans?

This might seem a weird criticism but there's something that doesn't sit well with me about Ektar. I don't know how to properly describe it other than to say it reminds me of digital, something about the contrast, saturation, and fine grain.

Matt, you can always use Exposure 2 to add grain. :)

Seriously, fine grain in color film was always the holy grail when there was only film. This new film does fine grain very well. But digital does it even better, so I'm not sure where such a film fits into the landscape right now. I'm not sure there is a real market for it.

I think there may be a market - considering the DR, FF on an RF, and use in panorama cameras. I think there is as much market for it as any other color film - especially since there is a low level of grain ( yes, there is grain).

Of course the addition of 120 would broaden the market consierably, IMO.. :D

I think that they will come out with larger formats in the future, maybe next year. A lot of it has to do with how well the 135 format does and of course how much photographers ask for it. I am looking forward to seeing everybody's results!

took a walk with the Xpan and a roll of Ektar 100, and took a few sample shots. scanned with Nikon 5000ED.

(i've tagged it with sRGB, but i get a different rendering in Firefox and Safari on the Mac, as well as different in IE on windows... so your view of the greens here may vary)

collum: I like what I see from here (Mac PB G3, OS X 10.3.9, Firefox 2). Always like seeing work with the XPan. Would love to see how these print up.

I'm liking the look of this film! Methinks I need to pull the trigger and order some. Oh and the grain may be fine but it still imparts a texture to images that digital doesn't. Yep, and the dynamic range is much better than digital!

I actually found an old unexposed roll of Ektar 25 in a box in my garage last week. I think I'll shoot it and see what I get.

Now there is a film that I miss.

I just requested some sample Ektar from Kodak and here is the automated response I received:

"THIS IS AN AUTOMATED RESPONSE. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE.
Thank you for contacting Eastman Kodak Company.
You will receive a personalized e-mail message shortly, our goal is to respond within 24 hours.
Sincerely,
The Kodak Customer Service & Support Team"

Tuolume,

A few of us tried getting Ektar samples via the form you linked to without any luck. They end up recommending you sign up for ProPass.

I ordered a few rolls from B&H to try out.

I just shot my first roll. I like it! It isn't like slide film. But it is a LOT like Agfa Ultra. It's perfect, just at the moment my store of Agfa runs out, Kodak manufactures a replacement. I souped these in the Unicolor press kit.
