Now that is a way to use light to show off how nice this film is.
 
Got a roll to test from Central. If I survive the rally tonight, I'll see if I can load it up to shoot through by the weekend.
 
As expected, Kodak blew me off when I asked for a free roll:

This is full-frame. But, trust me, grain is crazy-crazy tight.

As far as post-scan adjustments go: one adjustment layer for Levels, and that was it. No color adjustment whatsoever (scanning tip: if you're using VueScan, use the color setting for Kodak Portra 160VC). One big reason I love Portra is is that, for me at least (I'm using a Minolta DS 5400, but this has been the case with all my Minolta scanners, going back to my first QuickScan 35), the film is drop-dead easy to scan, requiring at most, elementary tweaks in PS. The new Ektar was engineered to use the same color channels as the Portra line, meaning that if, like me, you shoot and like Portra, adding this film to your roster won't have you throwing fits at the computer. This scan was made at 2700dpi; I'm going to do a full-res scan shortly and see how it prints. But, yes, this stuff is smooth. Not "digital-smooth", thankfully (that title, IMO, belongs to something like Fuji Provia 400F...incredibly tight grain, but I never totally grokked the look of it); I was counting on Rochester not to screw this film up by trying to ape a digital-like patina, and thankfully they seem to have resisted. But I'll want to wring out this film a bit more before I make a decisive call (you might call this the exit-poll edition of my testing ;)). But, so far, I like what I see, a lot.

Just got an E-mail from Kodak saying that I cannot have a sample roll.

They advice me to phone Calumet here in the UK for purchase.

Better than nothing I guess :)

I just got 20 rolls from Freestyle. I'll be shooting it on a trip to New Orleans next week and I'll post some results when I get back.

Methinks the parties responsible for the generous handing-out of the new Portra films last time out were subsequently given 50 lashes by Accounting. Since I couldn't make it to Photo Plus Expo, where Kodak was giving the stuff away like Beer Nuts at Happy Hour, I just had to wait until I got the word from one of the Usual Suspects in town that they had the stuff to buy (B & H was first; don't know if either Adorama or Calumet have it by now).

I have 5 rolls of Ektar 100 on the way from B&H. Should be here tomorrow. Plan to shoot them at the Bronx Botanical Garden. I've spent the last two days shooting there. Not only is the Kiku - Japanese Chrysanthemum Show amazing, but the colors throughout the garden are just spectacular. Make sure to visit the ponds and waterfall at the Rock Garden. If you're in the area this week, this will not disappoint.

Even being a member of their "pro-pass" service, I didn't get a sample roll from Kodak. My friendly neighborhood proshop gave me one at least. I like the idea behind it. I hope it holds up, and I really really hope the release it in 120 and 4x5.

I mat get lucky and not have to use mail order since it was local for me.
They seem to cater to the digital folks. I try again later to se if Freddie
ordered any and I will keep you posted.

I have some Ektar 25 also and I've been thinking of shooting it also,
please post some images when you get done shooting. I was hoping
that since it was so slow and I kept it in the freezer it may not shift
too bad. Good luck w/it.

Just picked a roll from a local shop (Samy's) today.

Earth to Kodak - please make it available in 120 !
 
I would be interested how does this film comapre to say Pro160C/S or Superia in the terms of contrast and color. I am very happy to see a new fine grain film on the market, but I am more concerned about the contrast - usually if I go for a color negative film I want to take the advange of the wide latitude it offeres (my choice is usually Pro160S or Pro160C).

And of course - also hope that it will come out in 120 as well. I actually do not have any 35mm camera right now and my wifes Minolta 7 is still loaded with some unfinished film ... ... or is it just a reason to get another camera ? :p
 
I have a roll in my F100 currently... but haven't had time to go out and shoot it. (dark after work sucks)
