Kodak Ektar 100

I have had the Kodak Pro Pass for awhile. I sent Kodak an email expressing an interest in this film, and when I got home today, there were 6 rolls waiting for me in the mail box. I was hoping for the 2 rolls, but had 6 instead. I have been asked to give my imput about this film, and will have some processed at Costco, as well as my local pro lab. My problem now, which camera and lens, and the weather here in the NW is dismal to say the least. I guess I will wait for some kind of light before I try it out, although I may just shoot a roll in this crappy weather to see what it will do. I am thinking M3 and all my lenses, including the LTM ones.
Any thoughts or advice?
 
Art, I sympathize, it has been terribly grey and rainy in the NW lately. However, given Ektar's vibrant colours it could be interesting to see what it does with the muted tones we've had of late.

Two seperate calls about Ektar in one week! Maybe this will open their eyes. But if they charge for Ektar what they charged me for a roll of 160nc they can go out of business for all I care. $10.00 for a roll of film.😱 I just got a couple of rolls of Ektar with my order from Freestyle in the mail today. I'm going to go shoot a roll tomorrow. Maybe at the Veterans day parade in WS. If you find any local let me know. I wish Carolina Camera Supply in Greensboro was still in business.
 
All these photos from the Ektar 100 are nice. Keep posting them. I have a feeling this will mark the end for Kodachrome. I know there isn't much simularities between the two films but sometimes you get these gut feelings.

From what I have seen, it will never replace Kodachrome, but it seems it is coming close for prints from same. I will try test the rolls I recieved, and post my thoughts later. In the meantime, is there any C41 or E6 better?
 
mabelsound: I meant to mention this before, but I love those shots. Did you take all of these while on a group ride (noting the cyclists in image #2)?

Thanks, Barrett! No, I was out in my car that day, looking for colorful things to shoot, to test out the film...and I saw those people waiting for the rest of their group, and pulled over and asked if I could take their picture. It's funny, the guy in front was skeptical about the whole thing...like, "what is this guy, a perv?" But the woman who is smiling was super enthusiastic.

I bike to work, but they were planning on cycling all day...to the nearby town of Moravia and back.

The colors are a bit more pale than at chrome (Velvia, Provia). But you have a film that is as fine grained as the best Fuji Chromes? .....and 2-3 stop more lattitude? .....I guess you have better control of the high lights with this film than with a chrome?
 
MXP, right, I just used the on board meter with this film, so nothing special there. The grain is gone, and there is more latitude. As to colors I'm not sure I toned done that first one. It was just too much.

Ok!
I look forward to try the film. Could be interesting to see a 4000 dpi quality scan in 100% (e.g. a small crop). In this resolution grains are visible I guess?

Don Hutton already posted a 4000spi Howtek scan....I believe in this thread. Looks incredible! I'd be happy with prints up to 20x30 from a decent high rez scan. 16x24 will work easily.

I'd love it if Kodak made this their main color film for the future. Release it in 35mm, 120, 4x5, 5x7, 8x10 and we're set!!!
 
Will, aka ShadowFox, I always thought EktaChrome 64 and X had a slight blue shift. Ektar100 is a little cool, too. I will continue to use it, especially for color events. Skin tones as Kodak says will be better with one of their Portras, but here is one that is taken in bad lighting (tungsten and north sun), it was certainly better than digital skins tones in the same situation:

You're right, John. That's why this new Ektar reminds me of the Ektachrome 🙂

The above picture is very lovely, and yes, digital without some work can't touch the skin tone, given the lighting.
