I will try to keep this brief by ommiting all the details but I am after some advice/opinion on the S2. I recently sent someone an S2, one which I thought was in very nice condition and fully working. Once it arrived, the person raised a couple of issues which were resolved. He then came back and said that the lens unit was loose and unacceptable and the camera has been returned. I now have a slight dilema.

I have 2 S2's and an S1.6. On all of these, you can rock the the outside of the front of the lens unit very slightly. My first 35mm camera about 30 years ago was also an S2 and this was the same. I have always been very pleased with the results of the camera and the lens seems incredibly sharp. I had always assumed that this "rock" was part of the design of the camera and in reality was just the outer casing and controls moving very slightly. The person who wanted the camera is adamant that the camera is faulty and unusable. Now ,although it is unlikely, it is possible that I have had 4 cameras with exactly the same fault even though I haven't noticed in anything untoward in the results.

Anyway before I decide what to do, I would just like to canvass opinion as to whether it is normal or not.

Many thanks
Kim

Kim,

My Konica S2 has a very slight but definitely perceptable shift when I move the lens from side to side. I certainly wouldn't describe it as loose. I've never given it much thought given the age of the camera. As good as the S2 is, I suppose it just wasn't built to the same tolerances of a Leica. Nor the price tag, of course.

I think the "rock" is normal.

Although I am no expert, I have two S2's and both have the rock. It was a bit disconcerting to me, until I got my pictures developed and I realized the rock did not affect the quality--unfortunately, one less thing to blame besides me. --John

Kim, for what it's worth, both of mine have the S2 "wiggle" - I have only been able to run film through the one though - and the pics were great!

My S2 has some movement. Pics are very good, although I've never shot open aperture at close distance, where such play could show up?

I have the excess "play" in both of my S2's as well as in my Montgopmery Wards version of the same camera. It isn't a problem although I can't imaging Konica allowing cameras to leave the factopry like that. It must be a an "aftermarket addition".

For what it's worth, I've owned three and all of them have 'lens wiggle.' I was worried at first but I've never had a problem. I think there are also a bunch of threads archived on this topic at the yahoo groups: konicarangefinder and camera-fix. I guess I'm stating a bunch of stuff y'all already know: Sorry!
