Just bought an M4-P – Confessions of a GAS binger

Had a recent very bad bout of GAS over the past couple of months. Partly caused by a renewed enthusiasm for using film in general and rangefinders in particular. Partly caused, no doubt, by deeper and darker psychological and sociological flaws.

Whilst the symptoms of this attack have been spending far too much money and acquiring more ‘stuff’ than a single person needs, as well as spending too much time in shops or in the internet looking at camera stuff, one side effect is that I have picked up some quite decent gear in the process – and I do love using it.

The principal long term effects of this recent attack (which I can recall) include the following:

- A CV 35mm f2.5 Color-Skopar II (which I like a lot)
- A Canon screw fit 35mm f2 – which whilst nice and dinky is not of the best quality but looks OK on my Canon P
- An old and tiny tiny Elmarit 35mm f3.5 screw fit, which I am already deeply in love with
- A 50mm Summilux first version – which is one of the nicest lenses I have ever bought
- A new Voigtlander Bessa R2C – which managed to get damaged and now must repair
- A mint Bessa R3M collector camera with Heliar 50mm f2 (where I paid my best price – combo, mint in box £335)
- An old Contax and two Zeiss 50/f1.5s
- A Russian Contax copy and two Russian lenses
- A particularly silly looking FED with lens
- Yet another Shanghai 58 rangefinder (but hurrah this one works); and a
- A Shanghai medium format folder

…. Draws deep breath

The darker side then persuaded me what I really wanted was another Leica M to keep my M6 company. My m6 remains my favourite camera. Having been through quite a few DSLRs (currently very happy with the 5D Mk II) and SLRs and of course rangefinders, as well as medium format cameras which I still love using, and having bought, briefly fell in love with, then sold, an M8, the M6 has remained the one camera I would say is my complete favourite. I used to have an M4-P. My first proper M. I loved it and would often travel with the M6 and M4-P together. When I sold some Leica gear I sold the M4-P (as well as an M3) but kept the M6 and an M2. I have never had quite such a close relationship with the M2. It’s very good, and I have had good results from it, but it just doesn’t feel quite the same. I didn’t want the expense of a good condition second M6, and anyway as I have one, why have another? I’m getting far more used to non meter cameras these days and often see no meter as an advantage (ie using the CV meter you hook on top means you can take a reading at waist level). So I pressed the dreaded ‘buy it now’ button and bought this.

Looks and sound good. Eh? If all is true then I think the price is not bad either.

I swear this is the last of my (significant) GAS splurges, at least of 2009 (how many times have we said that before) and so lay my soul before you so that you may cast stones at me if I ever pop up on about another cute lens – at least until 2010. No one can really justify spending such money on stuff when one camera and one lens is really all you need. And if I had spent the money I just spend paying off my mortgage I would be a more sensible man. But I guess it gives me pleasure, and I do rush out and use the cameras almost as soon as I have them. And when I look at the total I have spent I can at least say that I could have blown nearly that whole amount on one single M8.2 plus a cheaper new Leica lens to go with it.

Cool buy. The M4P is a killer camera. Price is good, and, in my experience a good seller.

I'm the wrong person to comment on GAS though  - other than, don't worry so much about it as long as it's fun and you can afford it.

Roland.

You and I must be the only ones who like the 1959 Summilux.

Instead of buying bits of this and than, save your money and buy what you really want.

For instance the 35 Elmar was one of the trashyest lenses I ever tried, not sharp and field curvature. Replaced it with a 35 3.5 Summaron which I have had for 20 years.

Any Leica Nut needs a M4P. Like an M6 with a dead battery. Great cameras and extremely durable. I still have 2 of them, both bought new in 1981/82 and beaten up over the decades. Great with the 28 and the 35. I had one refinished in "crackle" finish black as the black chrome was getting worn off - the other one remains in its "natural" state - including the deep dent on the top-plate and some other nicks.

I just slapped myself senseless and prevented a buy-it-now syndrome... not sure how long I can do it. I'm feeling that M attack again.

Enjoy your new camera, the M4-P is a MUST HAVE, very well done.
I know the seller in person and he call me to offer me the camera but I have buy one "new" in box from POLYFOTO never used.
I fell happy for you and I know the camera is in good hands.

best

@Nick... dude, so it was you who bought that?? I was also tracking that same camera myself, but decided on an M2 instead. Now I can't wait for the thing so I can go an find a nice lens for it.

Thanks for the good wishes and understanding. Can't wait to get my hands on the M4-P, and put a little CV 28/3.5 on it as a body cap (a minor lapse).

payasam - I was wrong - forgetting what I bought now. It's actually an old Summaron. And very nice too. Just got some photos back from it taken with my old Shanghai. This lens, as well as many others, is likely to have intercourse with my new M4-P

I've had two 35/3.5 Summarons, Nick, and it's an excellent lens. I really did see in its results a kind of 3D quality. If it weren't for the slow speed I'd still have one. And yes -- it's a bit much (or much too little) for my clumsy fingers. Your example seems to be clean, which is often a problem with this lens.

M4-P ... 😀 The best Leica M ever. Enjoy ! 🙂

Is your Summaron 35mm 1:3.5 the older, small LTM version ? A very nice lens.

While I've been purchasing a few M3s over the past few months and love, I still have some meterless GAS in me 😀... Can you guys tell me what is so special about the M4-P?
BTW, my lenses of choice are a 21, 50 and 90 (perfect for the M3s).

Should I look into one of these or buy two more M3s?

Cheers,

What I like best about the M4-P is that it is the newest M still having the 50mm frame-line size of the preceding Leica. All newer M-Leicas (including the MP and MP-3) have the smaller-sized frame-lines for 50mm.

If you don't need 28/75, the M4-2 might be a good alternative. There were some problems with early M4-2 after production shifted to Midland and the new production method wasn't perfected.

Starting from later M4-2, the RF was simplified and a condenser-lens removed. Originally, the aim was to get brighter frame-lines but these VF are more prone to flare than a M5, M4 or M2.

I think the M4-2/M4-P are the best M Leicas for shooter and not collector. Simply working-horses with rugged stainless steel gears and without fancy electronics or self-timer.

Gabor - Thanks! So how about the M4-P 50th Anniversary... Anything special or just a collector's item? Also, I was under the impression that the M2 was the last model that was all metal...

Slap me a couple of time and force some black coffee down my throat, but sometimes I think (in my darkest thoughts) the Bessa R2 is the best "Leica M" I've seen: Perfect mechanical shutter with metal curtains, dead-on accurate TTL meter using cheap modern batteries, bright finder with four frame lines (with no fussy, error prone automatic selection mechanisms), light, low cost, and does not require a $250 CLA.
