I'm a huge fan of the Shieldzone "Invisible Shield" screen protectors. They have one that appears to fit the R-D1 perfectly: (GDC25) Digital Camera 2.5 inch LCD Screen (49mm x 37mm).
Has anyone who's using a screen protector had any trouble closing the screen with the screen facing inward? I'm wondering how tight the tolerances are - whether the thickness of a screen protector could keep it from fully closing.

I have a screen protector on mine and have no problems folding the screen in. My protector is also much thicker than any I have had before so you should be fine.
Having said that I tned to rarely have the screen 'out'. I prefer to shoot and then see what I got when I get home.

Ditto, which is why I want to make good and darned sure it doesn't interfere with stowing the screen with the screen side inward!
I may try sticking on an old PDA film as an experiment...

I pretty much threw away the plastic screen protector for my S2 after trying PDA screen protector film from the local office store. Just cut it to fit and it lasts a few weeks to months depending on how much I'm shooting. It doesn't seem to effect the viewing significantly and its cheap and durable.
Tip: cut the corners off just a bit as that's the place on the film that gets snagged and starts to peel off most quickly.
