Does anyone know where I can find a Leica brand 43mm UV filter. It seem that the Leica brand is the only one that fits the lens hood for the 50mm 1.4 asph lux old style lense that comes with the MP-3 kit .
Thanks

do they make new filters still? i don't think so. if you want new search out a b+w brand. very expensive but very nice.
i search ebay and here mostly for good used filters. i like uv filters but not enough to buy a new one.

Joe and Joe, 43mm is still a common size. You can get them from any of the regulars-B&H, Adorama, Focus, etc. I think they're probably still around cause some digitals use that size. As far as Leica brand, I think that may be an ebay deal. You might have to try on several brands to see which ones fit. Stu

i know it's a once more popular size as some of the zm lenses use them and i have had to track them down.
leica stopped making filters a long time ago i think, actually, b+w made them for leica. (i have read that)

Thanks, I know that Leica stopped making them but according to Tony Rose, only the leica brand works with the hood of this new lens that comes with the new MP-3.
I'll keep trying ebay.

are you sure about that joe?
why would leica make a new lens that needs an old filter to work?

I can only go on what I was told, as I don't have the lens yet. Leica made this new lens in an old retro fashion, it is not like the 50mm 1.4 asph that you normally see.

If you are intrigued, you know how I feel, since I have done a google search and come up empty. Someone must have bought this kit and come up with a solution.

The 43mm filter is the "thin one" that will enable the 12586 hood to be used on the new LHSA Summilux 50 ASPH. The new 43mm filters will not allow you to use the hood unless you screw in the filter after you place the hood on the lens. I got one of the Leitz 43mm UVs from Don Goldberg (DAG).

Leica don't make filters they are made for them by an OEM. The 43mm Summilux is tricky because 43mm filters were made with a 0.5 pitch on the thread and they fit that lens. Now most 43mm filters have a 0.75 pitch thread.

I have a version 2 pre-ASPH Summilux with a 43mm MRC B+W UV filter on it. The number on the filter box is 23185. I have two of these filters, one fits the lens and the other doesn't. Figure that one out! Apparently Zeiss lenses have a problem with 43mm filters too. See the thread below.

The Leica filter you are talking about is E43 UVa 13206 and has a 'extra lip' that takes the place of the hood lip ring on the front of the 43mm filter size Summilux lens. The new filter also has a thread on the front if you find the need to add another filter.

Yes, hard to find. I have one on a 50s Nikkor f1.4 5cm lens and used a Summilux hood with it. I may/maynot be selling the lens and if I do - and the buyer doesn't want it the filter - would be selling it.

Not sure about the new ASPH Summilux, but if its the same as the old 43 Summilux, they made a special thin version of filters for that lens and it fits 'inside' the hood without problems. But being 'old glass' on a new lens like the ASPH you may buy one of these ( also not so common, but more so than the newer 13206 ) and replace the glass with the glass from a B+W MRC filter.

PeterLoy - Google for web - has a 43mm leitz 43mm uv used 25 GBP!
My leitz 43mm does not interfere with the '80 lux Leitz hood, but I dont think it has a 2nd set of (female) threads. I'll try my other 43mm filters - and report, now that I'm aware there may be also be thread pitch problems- groan.

P.S. My filter does not have an extra lip it is merely rather low profile.

I have two chrome Leica 43mm UV filters that I don't need. They are the old filter which has the slim outside diameter so the old lens hoods and the new MP3 lens hoods work on the old style & MP3 Lux lenses.

They are for sale. If anyone still needs one, please PM me or email me.

Best,

Ray

I have one that i may consider selling - you can get helipan 43mm filters but the leica one has a raised knurled edge which stops the hood from slipping off.
I may trade this in against a 46 lecia UV depending on the trade in price - failing that i do have a rodenstock 43 mm UV that i will sell if i don't trade.
I think i also have orange and green. I should know for sure if i'm selling them by the end of the week. I've also got some 43mm screw in vented hoods that i won't be needing.

More then half my 43mm filters did not fit on my lux, only the three leitz filters ( I have) screwed in. These leitz filters are low profile as well and thereby clear the hood by a large margin - when the houd is fitted either operationally or reversed, they neither have a female thread, nor any other device on front or periphery - merely a low profile.

The pitch issue seems to be more generic as a 46mm Hoya show case box that was in same storage area had a - 46mm 0.75 pitch - label on it that I had not seen when I purchased, if it has a label one presumbs that there are other pitches out there.

My gadget bag is now several filter boxes lighter - useful.

Ok my post was abstract, I apologise, I tried to thread the Leitz filters onto the front of the 3rd party filters and none would thread, without undue force by more then one turn after start. The filters should thread easily.

So I tried one third party on the lux and yes it did thread without any force. It was this that worried me the most. I have other lenses with damaged threads and they can be a pain.

So I quarantined all the 3rd party filters without seeing if they would foul with the hood, some looked as though they might.

I use the 43mm with a 40.5 to 43 mm step anyway so there is no real loss, the Leitz uv, green and orange are pretty much all I use on a fast handling M, I'd prefer a light yellow, but too expensive today.

I did not want to risk a cross thread some time in future with the lux...
Even more worrying for me was the label on the 46mm showcase, that it was 0.75 pitch.

Again I apologise, and I had not detected any problems although I may never have used the 3rd party filters ever.
