Leica Elmar 50mm F2.8

I've had the early and recent M mount Elmar 50 f/2.8 and couldn't get used to the early one's front rotating - I found it impossible to use.

I really like the recent one on my M7, fast to focus with the short throw, and very sharp.

Just to recall the awesomness of the old Elmar.

I don't believe !!
no circular shape bokeh like most cron have !!!
what a nice background rendering !!

It's nice to see all of the great reviews of this lens. I just picked it up as part of the set with the Leica M6-J...can't wait to start shooting with it.
It was awesome that Leica recreated the Elmar 50/2.8 (to complement the M6J), but be aware that it's quite different from its earlier Elmar namesake. New version: sharper, much higher contrast, short throw focus, cammed focus (aperture ring doesn't rotate), six-blade diaphragm. I chose to stay with the old version for its broad DOF scale (thanks to long-throw focus) and the 15-blade diaphagm.

Mine is from 1965. I really love this lens - here with Tri-x loaded. BTW that is the Queen Mary 2 in the background on its maiden voyage to Melbourne earlier this year.

I have one from 1958 and it's in great condition. I love the photos it takes - sharp where it matters but produces nice creamy, instantly usable photos

Bump for this thread as I have been using this lens a lot recently, I'd post some pics. but they are a bit rude and contravene posting rules. It is rapidly becoming my favorite 50mm!

Thanks for bumping. Gives me a chance to remind everyone I've got a really nice circa 1971 Elmar Red Scale in the RFF classifieds for a pretty decent price.

Don't make me offer such a nice lens to the wolves on Ebay.....🙁

Technically the Elmar lenses are not Tessars (the aperture is in a different location) and they certainly aren't Triplets, Cooke or otherwise.

But I don't hold that against them. They are certainly nice lenses anyway. 🙂

I have this lens (although I am trying to let go to fund a family emergency). It feels like I am having to let go before exploring its full potential. I have the one with 15 aperture blades and a soft pinkish coating. The bokeh is extremely smooth. Stopped down it's very sharp. I wish I could pair it with a digital body and keep it as a portrait lens exclusively. If you get one, the one caution regarding use is that you must make sure that the lens is fully extended and locked.

I can be very fickle. One day I shoot with my Summicron and I absolutely love it. The next with the Summilux and the feeling is the same.

On this particular day I was shooting with my old Elmar 50/2.8. My copy has a few scratches on the front element but I was able to get one of my favorite photographs of my Grandson.

Does it get any better than this?? 😀
