Gear Whore #1
Cal, you know how it is at work... :bang:
John,
It gets worse as you get older. At 57 you wake up a lot to pee, even if you don't have to go, then during the day it is hard to stay awake.
How do think I mined all these killer deals on gear. At this point I am saturated and have more gear than I really need.
I need something new to obsess about. LOL.

Sounds like an interesting camera. A new type of X?

John,
Lately it has been novel ways to experiment with film development. Basically create a mess to later organize. I guess I like some chaos in my life that I can later say I can control. LOL.
How spoiled are we?

Cal, I wouldn't worry about an EVF, you would adjust fine. I've got a year on you and have been shooting SLR's and Leicas since 1976. Now have to use a Nikon 1 V2 for a number of different projects and it wasn't a big change from using an OVF to using an EVF, as long as the execution is done well.
Best,

Tim,
Thanks for your response. A small FF 28 Leica seems to be a good camera for me. I hope the rumor is true.

On paper this is 100% my dream camera. Realistically it'll be a decade before I'll be able to buy it though.

It does seem that Leica is targeting me. They kinda made my dream camera when they created the MM9, and now there is a M-246. I already own a MM9, and plan on adding a M-246 somehow...
Perhaps Leica might consider making a M-body that can exploit modern Leica glass but make a 36x36 sensor to shoot the square. Imagine a M-body size, but only a little taller.
Leica are you listening?

I went to the store to check A7. Got EVF to my eye and it took time to stabilize and get the image sharp. Did quick pan and it was it. It failed to render while on the pan and has to stabilize and get it sharp at the end.
Knowing what Leica digital cameras are usually behind of almost any other manufacturer in terms of digital and firmware components, I doubt EVF is going to be any better.
External VF is the remedy for fast framing, but how good this rumored camera is for MF with zone focusing is another question.

Ride, dive, shoot.
Man just went I thought my next camera purchase (and only purchase for a while) would be the new GRII.
I guess I'll have to see the overall size (and the price) of the new Leica cam first. I do have a feeling it will be substantially bigger than the GR. Although I am much liking the idea of FF "compact" camera from Leica, I'll probably still end up staying with the GR line for carry-everywhere 28mm compact just for the ultimate portability.

Thanks for the response. I once found a Contax T3. I was walking along an abandoned part of Brooklyn near where I once lived and almost stepped on it. I sent away for the operating manual and began to shoot this camera that is highly reguarded by many. I found that the shutter delay and working around all the automation made the camera not worth the bother. Never took a good picture with it. I'm sure its a great camera, but it did not work for me.
An EVF, like John noted is not likely the best for me.

In regards to VF or no VF.
Using the Ricoh GR has taught me .... composing on a 3" screen is much nicer than at eye level for 28mm and wider.
Seeing the scene and it's components. Finding the eye point desired. Levelinging the horizon.... all are much more efficiently achieved on a digital "Ground Glass".
With 50mm or longer I want to isolate the subject I'm focussed on capturing.
With the wides it's a scene I'm usually after. "GG" is the way to go.

Nice to see Leica still releasing new consumer products, at least they're still trying to stay in the game.

Not in my neighborhood.
If it's full frame, it'll cost 2x the price of the Sony. If it's APSC, it'll cost at least $3500.
A new Ricoh GRll is on the way. I can't see this being better then that. The GR is an awesome camera.
I have a M8, a M9. All this was followed up by a family. I can't spend the kind of money on this sh*t like I did when I was single or when it was just the wife and me.

Actually Keith I think you have it.
An update to the GR is much more exciting than a full frame 28mm from Leica at the moment.
Simplicity has become key for me lately.
The GR is all of that at a killer price.
My mom has permanently adopted my current GR... Looking forward to see what the new one offers and/or the discounts that may appear on the current version
I read an article with a Ricoh exec yesterday. Apparently they can barely keep up with global demand for that camera.
Wonder if Leica got wind of that fact with this announcement

Yeah great!
If they then expand to a 50mm fixed version it would finally fill a place in the market that has been void.
FF fixed. It's only the Sony RX1 at the moment. I love fixed lens and leaf shutter![]()
Agreed.
I dont think theres much demand for a fixed 28. Its just too wide.
I doubt Leica would go that route.

Yeah, I think even the best EVFs on the market still have slight issues with lag.
But personally I don't mind that much - I (like most people I assume) frame mentally first and use the viewfinder to confirm FOV. Lag in practice isn't really as big an issue as it's made out to be, I'm not running around with an A7 strapped to each eye. No doubt others will feel differently.

Since I'm still so happy with the Leica X typ 113, I see little real need for a 'Z' with with a 28mm EFOV lens, regardless of whether it has a FF or an APS-C sensor—it's simply not that important to me. If they were going to release this new camera with a 50mm EFoV lens, THEN I'd be first in line for it, would want the FF sensor, etc. I've wanted a Leica X-50mm since I bought the Leica X.
But, of course, all bets are off until Leica announces what they're going to release. And then I'll think about it. I've got more Leica gear now than I ever thought I'd accumulate. Do I want even more? Beyond the MM246 I've already got on order? Hard to say until I see what the product is...
I look forward to seeing what Leica is coming out with, whether I want to buy it or not.

I'm with you on this... though I'm still curious about this rumored new camera.

Me too... I don't even notice the lag and people that photograph with me can tell you I photograph fast. I guess it's from always using the same focal lengths for years that I know what will be in the frame before I bring the camera to my eyes. Oh course, I still blow it at times though...
