I finally succumbed to the siren call of another MP body. Strange though. The ISO setting on the back of the camera has the Celsius temp on the top and then the ISO on the bottom. My first MP only has the ISO setting. Anybody able to explain when this change took place and which is the newer model?

Wow, a second MP! It's odd how my cameras seem to come in pairs... But do you mean DIN film speed scale rather than °C? Or does it have a thermometer built in too? 🙂 Maybe these different parts were intended for different world markets?

Holy shizsnap Batman! Is that what it is, "DIN" I thought it was something dealing with development temps or some other crap like that. Duuhuu! So maybe this MP is a little older.

I believe DIN stands for Deutsche Industrie Normen, the German equivalent of ASA = American Standards Association. ISO is defined the same way ASA was but seems to have taken over worldwide for film speed designation. Some confusion may come because I think DIN was specified in "degrees" of something! My M2's back cover carries a film speed reminder scale with both ASA and DIN numbers from ASA 4 (DIN 8) through ASA 1000 (DIN 32)

I'm not certain exactly when ISO (International Standards Organization?) became the world-wide standard but the intent was to have one rating system instead of the two dominant ones previously in use: ASA (American Standards Association) and DIN (Deutch Industrie Norms..... or the equivalent in German). Many older cameras have both scales on them in some fashion. I'm looking at a Praktica Super TL as I type this and it has both on the meter dial. Looking at a Voightlander VITO CLR shows that both are present.

Congrats on the new MP egpj! 🙂 Did you get a 0.72 mag? The serial nr's are stamped in ascending order so the cam with the highest serial nr. will be the newest.

ISO combined ASA and DIN into one rating. I think it was in the early '70s. Thirty years later and I still use ASA for rating film. And if anyone wants to convert ASA to Weston, remember the conversion factor is 1.0x.

Thanks Peter! It was an OK buy, especially before the prices went up today. Yep, got the .72 mag. The camera has a serial number of 288XXXX while the camera I have had for about a year and a half has a serial number of 293XXXX. Big difference ehh?

I like the look of the MP with the M6 back more, Then ISO only one is actually the same dial from the M7 and my MP has that dial, too. Which I think it looks less sophiscated but does not really do anything to the camera's functionality.

Indeed. My new M7 arrived on Wednesday and it has a serial nr. 294xxxx. My M6TTL is 246xxxx, made in 1998. They are moving along (slowly). 🙂 Let's hope they keep going!

Yep, you are right, that is running along rather slowly. At first I thought you were being a little over critical but then I realized that a first production run for a new SLR will be typically 100,000 units. Tonight I will raise a glass to Leica's future. I will be able to do my part in supporting this company when they produce a digital M. Hopefully it will be a full frame sensor.
