Leica has solved the sensor corrosion issue

At least in the US, I have not heard confirmation that Leica has started installing the new sensor yet.

I just dropped off my M9-P at Leica NJ this week, for a senor replacement appointment that I made 2 months ago. At the time I made the appointment, the new modules were still in field testing, and they told me turnaround time for replacement with an original sensor would be 2 weeks. (I don't know for what dates they're currently making appointments.)

However, I can tell you for certain that they do not yet have stock of the new sensor modules (and they're pretty annoyed with Leica Germany for announcing availability without giving them a heads-up). So I left my camera with instructions to wait for the new sensor modules to come in before doing the replacement.

I'll update this thread when I get more news from Leica NJ.

Ari, I sent my M9 with corroded sensor to Leica NJ in late June. They acknowledged receipt on 29th June, and sent me a letter saying the work will be completed 18 August. I called twice since the promised date, the first time the rep said the tech should not have put down a completion date. The second call, the rep said oh it should be completed this month.

I'd just like to point out that when I use my 1981 M4-P I get a new sensor with EACH exposure 🙂

I got a pricing confirmation that the cost to upgrade from a MM to M246 is the same as from the M9 to M240 i.e. $3500. I'll have the sensors replaced and will stick with both of my cameras, no upgrade for these prices.

$3500 (actually less, more like $3000) now buys you a perfect condition used M9 or ME. Which Leica will still warranty the sensor. So you could have a spare body while waiting for the other to be fixed.
$4000 now buys a nice condition M240. So for $500 more you can keep your M9 and have an M240!

I called Leica NJ last Friday to get a status update on my M9-P that I dropped off Sept. 7. They told me that they don't have any sensors in stock at the moment, and Leica Germany just informed them last Monday that the next shipment would be in January. Furthermore, quoth Leica NJ, there are enough cameras in line ahead of me that it's unlikely mine would get a sensor from the January shipment -- and they don't have any info on subsequent batches. Not exactly great news, eh?
On the bright side, I half-jokingly asked if they had any loaners available -- and it turns out they did! So I should be taking delivery of a M240 at some point this week, to feed my photography jones until my M9-P is back in action. 😀
